If luxury travel and enjoying the finer things in life is your love language, you’ve probably wondered how to recreate that same feeling at home. There’s just something about stepping into a beautiful hotel room — the crisp bedding, soft lighting, calming scent — that instantly makes you relax.

The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to achieve it. With a few thoughtful details, you can transform your bedroom from feeling like just another room in your house into a space that rivals a 5-star hotel. Thanks to Manchester Collection, I’m sharing my top 10 ways to create a luxurious hotel-style bedroom at home.

Beautiful hotel inspired bedding with subtle sateen stripe detail

1. Start with high-quality, hotel-worthy bedding

Luxury always starts with the foundations and in a bedroom, that means your bedding.

High thread count, sateen-finish sheets are what give hotel beds that signature softness and subtle sheen. They feel smooth against the skin, drape beautifully and instantly elevate the entire look of your bed.

I’ve used the Bespoke range from Manchester Collection, including the 1200 thread count sheet set and matching quilt cover. It’s honestly one of the best sets I’ve experienced — thick yet soft, with a silky finish that still feels breathable.

If you want your bed to look and feel like a hotel, this is where to invest first.

2. Master the art of hotel-style sheet layering

Ever noticed how hotel beds are always perfectly made? That’s thanks to thoughtful layering and techniques like hospital corners — where sheets are tightly tucked for a crisp, tailored finish.

It does take a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, it completely transforms the look of your bed. Even something as simple as smoothing out creases and ensuring your quilt sits evenly can make a huge difference.

Styling tip: give your sheets a quick steam if you want that ultra-polished, just-checked-in look.

Hospital fold flat sheets

3. Use mattress and pillow protectors for hidden luxury

This is one of those behind-the-scenes details that makes a big difference.

Hotels are known for their plush, comfortable beds — and protectors play a huge role in that. A quality mattress and pillow protector adds an extra layer of softness, while also improving hygiene and extending the life of your bedding.

It’s not the most glamorous styling tip, but it’s one of the most important.

You can read more about how to choose the best mattress protector in my previous guide.

4. Choose a refined, cohesive colour palette

Luxury bedrooms are never chaotic. They’re calm, cohesive and considered.

Start with a simple palette and build from there:

  • White for timeless, classic hotel style
  • Beige and warm neutrals for a coastal or Hamptons feel
  • Deep tones like navy, charcoal or forest green for a boutique, moody look

For this space, I’ve leaned into crisp white bedding for that classic hotel aesthetic. It feels fresh, clean and effortlessly sophisticated.

Hotel inspired bed styling

5. Keep patterns minimal and let texture shine

One of the defining features of hotel bedrooms is restraint.

Rather than bold prints, luxury spaces rely on subtle textures and finishes to create interest. Think tonal stripes, quilted details or a soft sateen sheen.

The Bespoke range features a delicate stripe that catches the light beautifully — adding depth without overwhelming the space.

If you love a more minimal look, you’ll also find plenty of inspiration in my guide to styling solid-colour bedding.

6. Layer pillows like a pro

Nothing says “hotel bed” quite like a beautifully layered pillow arrangement.

A simple formula that always works:

  • European pillows at the back for height
  • standard pillows in the middle
  • decorative cushions at the front

I’ve used European pillowcases from the Bespoke range to create that structured, elevated base.

The key is fullness. Don’t be afraid to go bigger and more plush than you normally would. It’s what gives hotel beds that inviting, sink-in feel.

Layer plush cushions for a relaxing hotel inspired bedroom

7. Embrace symmetry for a balanced look

Symmetry is a designer trick used in almost every luxury hotel room.

Matching bedside tables, identical lamps, evenly styled cushions — it all creates a sense of calm and order.

Even if your room isn’t perfectly symmetrical, aim to create balance where you can. It instantly makes the space feel more intentional and refined.

8. Create soft, layered lighting

One of my favourite things about hotel rooms is the lighting. You can always set the perfect mood.

While you might not have a multi-layered lighting plan in your bedroom, you can recreate the effect by using:

  • bedside table lamps for ambient light
  • a floor lamp for softness
  • warm-toned globes for a cosy glow.

Lighting at eye level is also a great biophilic design trick as it helps signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.

Add luxury details like fresh flowers candle and hand cream

9. Add thoughtful finishing touches (flowers, scent + styling)

Luxury is all about the details.

Fresh flowers instantly elevate a space, but if that’s not practical, a sculptural vase or indoor plant can achieve a similar effect.

As I mentioned in my previous bedroom styling article, scent is one of the most powerful ways we experience a space. Many hotels have a signature fragrance and you can create your own at home with candles, diffusers or DIY room sprays.

10. Upgrade your window coverings

If you want to take your bedroom to the next level, don’t overlook your window treatments.

A double curtain track — with sheer curtains for daytime and blockout curtains for night — is one of the easiest ways to achieve that hotel feel.

Not only does it look more luxurious, but it also improves insulation, privacy and light control.

I hope these tips on creating a luxurious hotel-style bedroom at home helps you create your dream sleep space. The Bespoke range from Manchester Collection has been on repeat in my bedroom since I created this look… and honestly, if you do the same you might find yourself looking forward to bedtime just as much as a hotel stay!

If you’re looking for a low-cost, effective (and dare I say it, kinda fun!) way to neutralise toilet smells, you’re in the right place! The other day I shared a couple of Instagram stories showing how to get rid of toilet smells by slathering shaving cream all over the base of the toilet, floor and walls.

I thought I’d get a few laughing or surprised emoji reactions… never could I have imagined those crime-scene-like photos would be my most liked, commented and viewed stories of all time!

Apparently, a toilet cleaning hack that looks slightly unhinged is exactly the content the internet wants 😂! But here’s the best part. This shaving cream toilet cleaning hack actually works.

Why toilets can smell even after cleaning

You scrub the bowl, disinfect the seat and mop the floor. And yet, the bathroom still smells. As a Mum with two young boys, I feel this deep in my core… trust me!

So if your toilet looks clean but still smells, the issue is usually hiding in places you’re not cleaning properly.

Common culprits include:

  • urine splashes around the base of the toilet (hello life with boys!)
  • odours absorbed into grout or silicone joins
  • tiny drips that run down the back of the pan
  • build-up underneath the rim
  • poor ventilation. This is especially common in smaller bathrooms.

Often, toilet smells from underneath or around the base are caused by microscopic splashes that soak into porous surfaces. Standard surface sprays don’t always penetrate deeply enough to neutralise the smell.

What causes toilet smells around the base?

This is the big one. Even in spotless bathrooms, urine can splash onto grout, silicone joins, tile joins and the underside edge of the toilet base.

Over time, these surfaces absorb odours. That’s why you can clean the bowl thoroughly and still notice a lingering smell, especially in warmer weather.

Shaving cream spread all over the toilet

How the shaving cream toilet cleaning hack works

So why shaving cream? Shaving foam expands and clings. It seeps into grout lines, textured tiles and tiny crevices around the toilet base. As it sits, it helps draw out odours trapped in porous surfaces.

I will say that it’s not perfect solution. And it’s not a substitute for proper disinfecting. However what it IS brilliant for, is deodorising.

That’s why this shaving cream toilet smell trick has gone viral. It’s simple, inexpensive and surprisingly effective.

Toilet cleaning hack

Your step-by-step guide for how to get rid of toilet smells using shaving cream

1. Start with a clean toilet

Give the bowl, seat and exterior a standard clean first.

2. Shake your shaving cream

Use a basic white shaving foam (not gel). The cheaper the better.

3. Apply generously

Spread the shaving cream:

  • around the entire base of the toilet
  • along grout lines nearby
  • onto the floor around the toilet
  • lightly on lower wall tiles if needed.

Yes, it will look dramatic! Lean into it 😉

4. Let it sit

Leave it for at least 15 minutes. For stronger odours, up to 30 minutes should do the trick. You can leave it on for up to 3 hours if you like, but no longer than this, as the shaving foam could dry and become more difficult to remove.

5. Wipe and rinse

I like to clean it off using a 2-part approach. I start by removing the excess shaving cream with a microfibre cloth (one only used for the toilet) and warm water. Then I go back over with multipurpose cleaner and paper towel to remove any residue. Shaving cream can be slippery so it’s important to remove it all.

You should notice the bathroom smells fresher immediately.

Shaving cream spread across the toilet

Does shaving cream really remove toilet smells?

The short answer is yes… but with context.

Shaving cream helps neutralise and lift odours trapped in porous surfaces. However:

  • it won’t fix plumbing issues
  • it won’t repair a broken wax seal
  • this is not a long-term solution if there’s a deeper leak.

If your toilet constantly smells from underneath, or there’s a strong sewer smell, it’s worth getting a plumber to check it out.

But for everyday odour build-up, this toilet cleaning hack is a winner. I’ve tried it, I’ve tested it, I live in a rental and I have 2 young sons. I feel like I’m pretty a pretty good case study for this cleaning hack!

Shaving cream spread across the wall tiles

How to stop toilet smells coming back

If you want to prevent the problem rather than just treat it, you should regularly clean around the base of your toilet, not just the bowl. Be sure you pay attention to the grout and silicone joins and consider resealing your grout if it’s very porous.

If possible, improving the ventilation in your bathroom can help stop toilet smells from coming back. And give your toilet (and the base) a monthly deep clean using this shaving cream method.

It’s a simple DIY toilet deodoriser trick that can make a big difference.

Shaving cream cleaned up

FAQ: Toilet smells and natural cleaning

Why does my toilet smell even after cleaning?

Because odours are often trapped in grout, silicone joins or around the base… not in the bowl itself.

How do I deodorise a toilet naturally?

Baking soda and vinegar can help, but shaving foam is particularly effective at penetrating porous areas.

Is shaving cream a non-toxic toilet cleaner?

It’s generally mild, but it’s best used as a deodorising step, not as a disinfectant.

Is this just another household cleaning hack trend?

Maybe! But sometimes the internet trends gets it right.

If you’re keen for ideas on how to get rid of toilet smells, I’d highly recommend giving this shaving cream toilet cleaning hack a go. It’s affordable, low effort and oddly satisfying.

Just prepare yourself. It will look like a bubble bath exploded in your bathroom! And honestly? That’s half the fun. Be sure to tag me on Instagram if you give it a go and ask any questions you may have in the comment section below!

There’s something about a fresh start that shifts your whole energy. I’ve recently gone through big season of change, and it feels incredibly grounding to have life settling back into place, and creating new spaces that reflect who I am right now.

Today I’m giving you a full look inside my new home office, sharing the exact pieces I used and, more importantly, the design decisions behind it so you can create your own stylish home office. Even if you’re renting or working with an awkward layout.

If you’re searching for home office ideas or inspiration, I hope this space shows that you don’t need a huge room or a massive budget to create something beautiful.

Designing a home office in an awkward-shaped room

A challenge in this room is that it isn’t perfectly square. The door is positioned on an angled wall that swings inwards, creating a large dead zone that could have easily become wasted space.

Instead of fighting the layout, I decided to embrace it, and create three mini zones:

  • zone 1: a bookshelf zone to hide those unsightly cables and internet boxes (and also a DIY upcycle project)
  • zone 2: a cosy armchair nook for filming and flexible work
  • zone 3: a structured desk area anchored by large-scale artwork.

Breaking the room into zones instantly made it feel purposeful rather than awkward. This is one of my top small home office ideas if you’re working with a tricky floorplan.

Styling shelves is all about balance — stack, layer, then edit. I share all my shelf styling tips in this article

Zone 1: The DIY bookshelf feature

One of my favourite parts of this room is the bookshelf. Mostly because it cost me almost nothing!

It’s also the first thing you see in the space and offers me the chance to effortlessly switch up the decor and display elements. I love any excuse to do some bookshelf styling!

I salvaged an old IKEA bookshelf that someone had left on the side of the road (proof that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!). Then, I gave it new life using Dulux chalk paint in the shade Battle Dress. This colour is a beautiful grounding green that adds depth without overwhelming the room.

To elevate it further, I lined the back with green corduroy fabric from Spotlight. The texture adds warmth and a subtle pattern, making it feel bespoke and layered.

This bookshelf is not only stylish but it’s also super functional. The pop of colour anchors the entire room while hiding all those unsightly cables and my internet box. Plus it’s a space for me to display my books, trinkets and decor.

If you’re looking for renter-friendly home office ideas, painting secondhand furniture is such an effective way to create personality without touching the walls.

Rust velvet armchair beside a ribbed cream side table with stacked books and a small potted plant in front of sheer curtains.

Zone 2: A cosy armchair nook for flexible work

Not every task needs a desk. I created a relaxed corner with the beautiful Lorraine armchair from Lifely. This chair is a real sculptural piece that feels soft and inviting while still looking elevated.

From my cosy nook, I love to film design tips, make phone calls, do some creative thinking and work on my laptop (when I don’t need to be sitting at my desk with dual screens!).

Having a comfortable seating option is one of the most overlooked home office inspiration ideas. It makes your office feel like a space you want to spend time in. Not just somewhere that you have to work.

The side table is another curb side find that I spray painted in Dulux Vintage Beige in their chalk spray paint range.

Minimal home office with curved timber desk, brown office chair and large zebra artwork on the wall.
Proof that a home office can be practical and beautiful. Warm timber, simple styling and one statement artwork is sometimes all it takes

Zone 3: The desk setup

For the main desk zone (aka the work part), I chose the Hudson home office desk from Lifely. It’s clean-lined, timeless and doesn’t visually clutter the space — which is important in a smaller room.

I like the curved edges. They really help with flow in a small office space. Curves add softness to all the angular lines in my space, and I don’t have to worry about hitting myself on a hard corner desk.

My office chair (the Tim office chair) blends beautifully without feeling bulky, keeping the overall look refined rather than corporate. I’m having a bit of a love affair with brown at the moment and love how it picks up the brown of the artwork behind.

Speaking of artwork, behind the desk, I hung the stunning ‘Two of a Kind’ artwork from Gioia Wall Art. Using large-scale artworks is one of my go-to home office ideas because it instantly elevates the room while adding a splash of fun and personality. It creates a fabulous, professional backdrop for video calls and meetings, and gives the desk an anchored feel.

Removable velcro strips are a fab way to hang artwork if you don’t want to add in a hook. Don’t think that just because you’re renting, you can’t display art.

Not forgetting the all important floor, I layered the Agnes 2457 beige modern patterned rug from Rugs of Beauty. A rug softens the room acoustically, adds warmth and helps visually define the desk zone.

If you’re renting, rugs are one of the best ways to transform a space without making permanent changes.

Gina Beschorner creating an interior design mood board with fabric swatches and colour samples for Style Curator.

My DIY oversized pinboard

I’m an incredibly visual person, so I knew my oversized pinboard needed to be front and centre in my home office space. I actually made it myself, using leftover cardboard packaging! It’s holding up incredibly well and adds texture and visual interest while being super practical.

I love using it to showcase samples, fabric swatches, inspirational pieces and project notes. This is one of my favourite budget home office ideas because it proves you don’t need expensive joinery to create a functional design feature.

If you’d like to make your own, I’ve shared the full step-by-step designer DIY here.

Home office ideas for renters

Just because you’re renting doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful, functional and aesthetic space. It’s important to remember you don’t need built-ins or structural changes to create a stylish home office. You just need thoughtful styling and a clear vision.

Focus on furniture over fixtures

When updating a home office, it’s easy to assume structural changes or new fixtures are the answer. In reality, furniture has far greater impact, and much more flexibility.

Use rugs and artwork to create impact instead of painting walls

A full repaint isn’t always practical, especially in rentals, shared spaces or homes where the office may evolve over time. Instead, use rugs and artwork to inject personality and create visual impact.

My pinboard is a real statement piece. It’s something I just lean against the wall as this ensures no damage to the wall. I’ve seen some people design full wall leaning bookshelves, so if you’re handy, you could do something even bigger and more impactful.

If I was staying here longer, I would consider a DIY like this. Maybe in my next home… you never know!

Rust upholstered armchair beside a ribbed cream side table in soft natural light.
If you’re hesitant about colour, furniture is a ‘safe’ starting point. A warm accent chair like this can transform a neutral room without overwhelming it

Refresh secondhand pieces with paint or fabric

Secondhand furniture often has better bones than many new pieces… it just needs updating. A simple coat of paint can transform a tired desk or set of drawers into something that feels current and cohesive with the rest of the room.

Even just swapping out handles for something more your style can completely change the feel of cabinetry.

I love to add colour and invest in pieces you can take with you. Upcycling furniture is a cheap and low-risk way to add splashes of colour. If it doesn’t work, no stress because it was going to landfill anyway.

In my space, I love how both upcycled pieces turned out and they allowed me to splurge on other items.

Create defined zones within one room

In many homes, the office shares space with a bedroom, living area or open-plan zone. Creating subtle boundaries helps the workspace feel purposeful rather than temporary.

Clear zones support better focus during the day and make it easier to mentally step away from work after hours.

Add texture to make the space feel custom

Texture is often what separates a functional office from a beautifully layered one. Incorporating fabric-backed shelving, upholstered pinboards, woven baskets, textured cushions or layered curtains adds warmth and softness to a space that can otherwise feel hard and cold.

I replaced my curtains with sheer curtains from The Hues. When I leave, I can take these curtains with me but swapping them from the heavy, aged blockout curtains lets in so much light and makes the space feel way more luxe.

It’s the considered details that ultimately give a home office its personality. And I’m so happy with how my space tuned out. What do you think?!

Shop my home office

I hope my home office makeover has inspired you to create a dedicated workspace or refresh yours if it’s feeling flat. Whether you’re starting with a blank canvas, or working with a tricky rental space, a few thoughtful updates and styling tricks can transform even the smallest corner into a productive space.

Autumn is a beautiful time of year. The days become mild and mellow as the crazy heat starts to subside. There’s plenty you can do in the garden in autumn, from planting cool season veggies to making your own compost. Our autumn gardening guide is brimming with ideas on how to best maintain your garden over the cooler months and everything you can do to maximise your garden’s potential.

Autumn garden maintenance

The main thing to do in the garden in autumn is to prepare for the cooler months ahead. That means, quite a bit of garden maintenance to improve your soil quality and plant pruning.

Get trimming

Tidy your boarders, clean your gutters and get rid of any dead vegetation left over from the summer. Autumn is the time to get your garden ready for winter so it doesn’t go into shock and ruin all the hard work you put in over the warmer months!

If you have hedges, give them a good trim now to keep them compact and bushy from ground level. Cut down any herbaceous perennials that have finished flowering.

Plants such as agapanthus need a good trim to stop them from going to seed, but also so your plant isn’t putting all its energy into old flowers. De-head any past flowers on your rose bushes and remove spindly growth on your wisteria plants, too.

Remember, pruning encourages new growth.

Clean out your compost

After all that trimming and pruning, you’ll have plenty more vegetation for your compost bin. Don’t have a compost? Our beginners guide will help get you started!

Clear out your compost and use it in the garden, making way for all the new waste you just trimmed away. Your plants will be grateful for your homemade compost!

Fertilise

To prep for those stunning spring flowers, now is the time to enrich soil with organic fertilisers.

Adding organic plant food to your soil increases water and nutrient retention (essential as we move into the drier months of the year) and encourages better roots and stronger plant growth.

If you have any citrus trees, it’s a good idea to feed them some specially formulated citrus plant food. It will help give them that extra boost when the weather cools down.

Mulch

Gardens and mulch go together like gin and tonic — they’re the best of friends! It helps the soil hold in moisture (mulch, not G&T 😉 ) so you don’t have to water it as often plus it keeps weeds at bay. Over time, your mulch will break down and improve your soil by adding nutrients.

Check out our mulching guide here for all the tips and tricks direct from the experts.

Clean your tools

Before you get excited about putting the mower away because it won’t get as much use during winter, it’s worth getting a service. That way, when you DO need to get it back out of the shed, you know it’s in perfect working order.

Give your garden tools a good clean, too. Things like spades, forks and other tools could all do with a bit of TLC. Dry everything thoroughly and oil any metal parts to avoid rust.

Check for bugs

Go round your garden, including any plants you have in pots, and check for any little nasties. Bugs and grubs will try to zap the life and love from your plants so have a good poke around and treat any you find as soon as possible.

Lawn care tips for autumn

Just because the weather cools down doesn’t mean you get a holiday from lawn care! A bit of TLC for your lawn in autumn will be a massive help, especially when winter hits.

Feeding time

For the very best lawn, you should aim to apply fertiliser twice a year. Autumn is a great time to feed your lawn because the grass has slowed down due to the colder nights, but the roots are still growing well. By using a slow release lawn food, it will help make grass thicker and roots stronger.

Fertilising your lawn will help it stay green and healthy throughout the year and will give it some additional protection during the cold winter months. Be sure to choose a fertiliser with a slightly lower nitrogen content to the one you’d use in spring or summer.

Sew it up

If your lawn needs a top up, sprinkle on some new lawn seeds this autumn. Before you do, remove any stones or weeds such as dandelions and you’ll have a lush lawn cover come winter.

Give it some air

For established lawns, aerate it with a garden fork. Also give it a firm rake to remove any tough patches or dead thatch.

What to plant in autumn

It wouldn’t be an autumn gardening guide without some planting tips, now would it?! There are still plenty of plants that thrive this time of year… let’s get planting!

Herbs and veggies

Cool season veggies are the ones you want to get into the garden now. Things like baby spinach, silverbeet, beetroot, onions, garlic, beans, spring onion, kale, lettuce, asparagus (providing you’ve got plenty of space) and cauliflower.

Herbs also love this time of year and will provide you with beautiful fresh flavours to add to your cooking. Plant coriander (no coriander hate-mail, please!), rocket, Italian parsley and chives now.

Check out our comprehensive guide on what to plant in the garden in autumn depending on your climate zone.

Fruits

Strawberries love this time of year so get some into the garden now to enjoy those sweet juicy berries straight from the garden — YUM!

Fruit trees are also great to plant in autumn. They love full sun, good drainage and room to grow so don’t overcrowd them.

Planting bulbs is one tip in our Autumn gardening guide
Plant bulbs in early autumn for the best results. Image via darlactools

Bulbs

Plant flower bulbs in early autumn to give them the best chance to thrive in time for spring. Bulbs are actually really easy to grow, just be sure to choose a spot which gets plenty of sun.

They don’t have to go in the garden either. Bulbs such as daffodils, tulips and hyacinths go great in pots and you can plant up to eight of them in each pot.

A great tip is to plant them as soon as you buy them, or store in a cool, dark place until you can pop them in the ground. And if you’re unsure of how many to plant, more is always better!

Flowers

Why not add some gorgeous potted colour to your garden? They provide fabulous bursts of colour and can go into the ground, in pots or even into lovely hanging baskets.

Ones to plant now include winter viola, pansies, lobelia, carnations and sweet peas.

Trees and shrubs

While not everything thrives in the cooler months, evergreens will provide structure and interest during these times.

Plant in autumn while the soil is warm and air is slightly cooler. Evergreens like sarcococca (also known as sweet box) and daphne will provide glossy, green leaves and beautifully fragrant flowers even during winter.

Final gardening tips

Protect your plants

If you live in a part of Australia which suffers from particularly harsh winters or heavy frosts, it’s a good idea to add protective covers on your most precious plants to help them survive.

Covers are like a lovely warm, chunky woollen blanket for your plants! Your local garden centre or hardware store will be able to advise the best cover to use.

When choosing bedding, you probably think about what quilt cover and how many cushions to use. But what about beneath the pretty bedding? Mattress and pillow protectors are often overlooked yet can do so much to enhance the comfort of your bed, while also extending the lifespan of your mattress and creating a healthier bedroom.

Whether you’re dealing with night sweats, allergies or simply want a fresher, more hygienic bed, let me share with you my top tips on how to choose the best mattress protector.

Why every bedroom needs a mattress protector

Just so we’re all on the same page, let’s go over what a mattress protector is and what they do. Essentially, there are many types of mattress protectors (I’ll go over those in more detail in the next section) and their job is – as the name suggests – to protect your mattress.

It goes without saying that mattresses aren’t washable but protectors are. Many people start using waterproof mattress protectors when they become parents for peace of mind against upset tummies or bed wetting.

But mattress protectors are a good idea for young and old alike as they also help shield your mattress from sweat, body oils, spills, dust mites and allergens. You see dust mites can thrive in mattresses by feeding on the dead skin you shed while you sleep. Gross, I know! When you add another layer (the protector) over your mattress, it creates a barrier which eliminates their main food source. This is especially important for people with allergens as the proteins from dust mites can trigger allergic reactions, not bites.

Whether you want to protect your mattress against stains or take advantage of the hypoallergenic properties, a mattress protector can extend the life of your mattress and has a big impact on sleep hygiene.

Types of bedding protectors

When shopping for a mattress protector you’ll quickly realise there are many different types – cotton, bamboo, waterproof, quilted – so which is best? Let’s cover the main pros and cons of each type so you can decide what’s best for you.

Cotton mattress protectors

A great solution for most, cotton is natural, soft and breathable. The added layer enhances the comfort of your mattress while also helping to regulate temperatures. This is especially beneficial for hot sleepers and people with latex or hybrid mattresses that tend to run hot.

Cotton mattress protectors are easy to care for — just put them in the wash and hang dry like regular bedding. Because of their comfort, breathability and durability, cotton is the most popular choice of mattress protector in Australia.

Bamboo mattress protectors

Another type of natural fibre mattress protector is bamboo. Offering similar benefits as cotton, bamboo is also breathable, naturally moisture-wicking and stays cool to the touch. It’s another popular choice for people with sensitive skin.

Waterproof mattress protectors

When many of us think of mattress protectors, we think of waterproof mattress protectors. Older style waterproof protectors were very ‘plastic-y’ and would crinkle, causing a noisy and hot sleep.

Thankfully these have improved and better waterproof versions now have a cotton top with waterproof backing. These still offer reliable protection from spills and night sweats but with improved breathability so you can still get a comfortable sleep surface.

Waterproof mattress protects aren’t just ideal for children. If you have pets, an Airbnb or short-stay property where you need easy mattress upkeep, or just a home where spills are likely then this would be the best mattress protector type for you.

Smoothing a white mattress protector

Quilted mattress protectors

Finally, there are also quilted mattress protectors which offer a thicker, padded layer of comfort. These are slightly warmer and a good option for cooler climates. Because of our hot summers, they are less popular in Australia. But if you’re the type of person who always feels cold at night they might just be the solution for a cosy night’s rest.

Pillow protectors

You might have noticed the heading for this section is ‘bedding protectors’ and that’s because it isn’t just your mattress that needs protection. Pillows collect just as much moisture and allergens as your mattress.

Although pillows are generally less expensive to replace than mattresses, you still want to create the most hygienic sleep environment you can and that’s why I’m a fan of pillow protectors. Using both mattress and pillow protectors creates the complete sleep protection system.

You can find pillow protectors in standard, queen, king and European sizes.

What to look for when buying a mattress protector

Now that you’ve got a good overview of the types and their main benefits, let’s talk about what to look for when buying a mattress protector.

In my opinion ‘fit’ is one of the main things worth investing in. I’ve bought cheap mattress protectors before where they just have elastic straps that hug the 4 corners of the mattress and these can easily come off, or shift underneath your fitted sheet. Not only are lumpy mattress protectors incredibly uncomfortable, if they don’t fit properly they aren’t doing their job.

Tip: always invest in a mattress protector with a fitted elastic skirt. If you have a high mattress, you may need one with a 50cm side skirt to keep your mattress protector firmly in place.

Another thing to look for when buying a mattress protector is one made from natural materials. Having slept on polyester mattress protectors in the past, they are hot and sticky. This is especially problematic if you have a latex or hybrid mattress or are a hot sleeper. Even if you need a waterproof mattress protector, look for one with a 100% cotton top so you still get good breathability.

Because I’m all about practicality, easy care is also an important factor and I suggest looking for one that’s fully machine washable. You’ll thank yourself later!

I also find it helpful to look at product reviews when shopping as you can quickly get a sense of what real people have to say. Is the quality as good as what they lead you to think online? What’s the delivery and service experience?

I recently switched to the 100% cotton mattress protector from Manchester Collection and have become another of their happy 5/5 star customers.

Protector care tips

The quality of your mattress and pillow protectors matters, but so does how you care for them.

How to wash and care for bedding protectors:

  • wash them every 1-2 months with a mild detergent (or more often for people with allergies or when spills happen)
  • avoid using fabric softener as it can reduce absorbency
  • never tumble dry, especially if you have a waterproof mattress protector as the heat can damage their protective layer
  • allow to dry out of direct sunlight.

Tip: for households with children and pets, it’s a good idea to keep a spare on hand so you can rotate between washes.

Our top styling and comfort tips

Mattress and pillow protectors are a great way to improve the comfort of your bed and one of the simplest, long-term upgrades you can make.

For even more ways to improve the comfort of your bed, try:

  • airing your mattress and bedding weekly. I like to deodorise my mattress with this simple room spray you can make yourself at home
  • layering your bed with crisp bedding made from natural materials, such as linen, cotton or bamboo
  • enhancing the comfort when sitting up in your bed. Euro cushions or an upholstered bedhead can make a world of difference
  • investing in a quilt and cushions that also offer breathability, the right density for your climate and a supportive construction.

I hope this guide to mattress and pillow protectors has helped you find the right solution for your needs. All of the products I used in my bedroom are from Manchester Collection and you can shop the full range of bedding protection online here. Do you have any questions I didn’t cover? How to fold towels neatly (the elevated functional fold)

But don’t be fooled, this technique is just as good for presentation. By using this towel folding technique, you hide any messy edges for a neat finish. It also creates a more plush and fuller looking towel, avoiding that sad floppy towel look. It’s an easy towel styling trick that you can complete with minimal hassle, making it perfect for the weekly towel wash or visiting guests.

In addition to keeping your towels neat, it’s equally important to protect your personal information online. Using a reliable VPN like PlanetVPN can safeguard your data while you shop for the perfect towels or browse for home styling inspiration.

Does your bedroom feel like a sanctuary you can retreat to at the end of a long day, or is it a space you’d rather keep hidden behind closed doors? It’s easy to prioritise main living areas when decorating our homes but we spend more time in our bedroom than any other space. And it’s not just about home decorating. There’s plenty of research linking our environment to sleep quality and overall wellbeing. One of the biggest bedroom trends for 2026 reflects this shift — creating a calm, nature-inspired retreat at home.

From earthy colour palettes and botanical bedding to tactile materials and scent, I’m sharing the top ways you can turn your bedroom into a relaxed sanctuary.

Nature inspired bedroom trends 2026

1. Earthy and nature-inspired bedding

Other than your floor and walls, your bed forms the largest surface area in your bedroom so embracing nature-inspired bedding will instantly set the mood.

You’ll find quilt covers inspired by nature in everything from vibrant florals to lush tropical prints. As someone who generally steers away from printed bedding, I love the Yarra quit cover from Manchester Collection. Its soft floral and leaf print in sage and blush pink gives an Australian bushland feel without overwhelming the space, and is the perfect base for this bedroom look.

If you prefer solid-coloured bedding, opt for a quilt set in an earthy hue. Trending bedroom colours for 2026 include greens, clay tones, blush pinks and soft sky blues. Deep browns and burgundy tones are also emerging, particularly for cooler months. Look for textured finishes where possible, such as quilting or embroidery that can add depth and interest.

2. Repeat accent colours across the room

Confident interior styling is about cohesion. One of the easiest ways to do this is by repeating colours across the room, rather than concentrating them in one place.

A fool-proof approach to developing a colour palette is to draw colours out of your artwork or bedding. For example, I used green and pink from the bedding and used this in the cushions and throw blankets, books on the bedside table, and flowers.

Generally, I suggest picking one dominant colour and one accent colour, rather than using several colours in equal measure, as it helps to create a more balanced look. You don’t need to overdo it, just adding 3-5 pops of colour across the room will achieve a harmonious look.

Alternatively, you could pick just one colour and play with different tones and shades to achieve a monochromatic look. Colour drenching (where you use one colour across walls, ceiling, furniture and décor) is a particularly hot bedroom trend for 2026.

3. Embrace scent

How we feel in a space isn’t just visual. Our other senses play a role and scent is a powerful one. In fact, smell is often the first thing our brain registers when we enter a room.

To create an uplifting bedroom, use fresh scents like citrus or peppermint. For a more grounding feel, choose fragrances such as cedarwood, clary sage or rosemary. If you’d like a softer, romantic vibe, floral notes would be ideal.

Candles, incense, diffusers or oil burners are all great options, and I suggest finding one that can double as a décor piece in its own right. For example, I love this natural travertine oil burner which adds another layer of earthy texture to the space.

Decorating bedside table

4. Add florals or indoor plants

Nothing helps to create the sense of a nature-inspired bedroom better than, well… nature! Whether you prefer indoor plants, fresh flowers or even foraged branches, greenery instantly breathes life into a bedroom.

If your bedroom doesn’t get much natural light, look for plants that thrive in low-light conditions. Otherwise, a small vase with fresh blooms or leafy branches on a bedside table has just as much impact.

Stylist tip: remember, giving a space ‘breathing room’ is one of the most effective ways to create a sense of calm so less is more. You don’t need to overcrowd every surface to create a bedroom with interest. Rather, pick your hero pieces and give them space to shine.

5. Layer earthy textures for comfort

Finally, a cosy bedroom is all about texture. Mixing materials creates visual interest and makes the room feel more inviting.

On the bed, that Yarra quilt cover is a gorgeous 400 tread count cotton with a sateen weave. It feels luxurious and soft while still being breathable for a restful sleep. For visual contrast and added comfort, I’ve layered two throw blankets in different materials and weaves.

One of the biggest bedroom trends for 2026 isn’t just about how a space looks but how it supports rest and wellbeing. Choosing natural fibres for your bedding can make a noticeable difference to comfort and sleep quality. Materials like cotton, linen and bamboo are breathable, temperature-regulating and gentle on the skin.

Beyond the bed, consider texture in other areas. Could you add a rug underfoot? Can you mix up the materials of your décor? Natural materials like linen, wool, wood, woven baskets and natural stone, will reinforce the organic aesthetic.

Stylist tip: when decorating, we often focus on what’s happening at ground level that we overlook walls and ceilings. If your walls are bare, you could add interest with art, wallpaper or wall panelling. While from your ceiling you may want to hang a pendant light, indoor hanging planter or hang ceiling mounted curtains.

Layer throw blankets on bed

If you’ve been inspired to refresh your bedroom with a nature-inspired feel, you can find all the bedding I used at Manchester Collection. They have a wide range of quilt covers online, including dreamy pastel florals, playful checker prints and waffle textured sets. I’m excited to be sharing more bedding looks from Manchester Collection over the coming weeks.

1. Add splashes of colour

Colour has been making a comeback in recent years and if you haven’t already jumped on the bandwagon, why not make 2026 the year to do it?! Forget this year’s Colour of the Year ‘Cloud Dancer’ and lean into some of the comforting, rich tones forecast this year like blush pinks, muted caramels, or ethereal shades like pastel lavender. I suggest looking at the colour forecast palettes curated by top paint brands like Dulux and Haymes.

From uplifting yellow to tranquil blue, colour affects our emotions and moods and we delve into colour theory in this article. Introducing a new colour palette to a room makes a dramatic difference to the way we feel in the space — and you don’t have to go overboard!

Simply using 3-5 pops of your colour palette across a room is enough. An easy way to introduce colour is to select two colours and one neutral, and then use a ratio of 60:30:10 where 60% of the space is one of those colours, 30% is another colour and 10% is your accent colour. This is an effortless and fool-proof way to introduce a colour palette that feels harmonious.

Of course, if you feel bold, you could go BIG and paint your walls. You could select a few accent walls or embrace the colour drenching trend where you use one cohesive colour from floors to ceiling (yes, that means painting your ceiling, walls and even skirtings all the same hue). Colour drenching looks fab in small spaces where you can create a cocoon effect so perhaps this is something to try in your powder room or reading nook. We share all our tips on how to paint like a pro in this article.

2. Create a vignette you love

How’s the top of your sideboard, dresser or bedside table looking? If you do an eye roll every time you look at one of those spaces, why not turn it into a vignette you love?!

It’s super simple to create a vignette (aka a styled arrangement) and I share my top vignette tips in this article.

Some easy things to remember:

  • use a base of some kind to anchor the arrangement (in the pic below I used a stack of books or you could use a trivet or tray)
  • mix up the height and scale of the objects on top, such as the taller and wider glass cloche and the smaller crystal
  • play with materials, I’ve used glass, metal, crystal and books
  • use an odd number of objects, clusters of 3, 5 or 7 look best
  • introduce a pop of life, such as the devil’s ivy plant 😉

3. Rearrange furniture

After the festive season, our wallets can feel a little stretched but freshening up your home doesn’t have to cost money.

Simply rearranging furniture — or shopping your home as we like to call it — can have major impact. Consider switching side tables or occasional chairs between rooms, or trying a different furniture layout within the one room. At the very least, we suggest pulling furniture away from walls to give breathing space to a room.

4. Out with the old

You know how in the intro we said the start of the new year is a time to let go of the old? Well around the home that means decluttering in a big way!

If you don’t love it or haven’t used it in the past 12 months, it’s a sign you may just be able to let it go.

Decluttering can actually be a good opportunity to sell items you no longer want or need to make money to buy that piece you’ve always wanted. Use platforms like Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and eBay to earn a little extra cash to put towards things you actually want and need. Check out these top decluttering tips to help you get started.

5. Replace your mattress

They say we spend a third of our lives in bed so we better make it a comfortable one! If you notice your mattress doesn’t support your body, is lumpy or just uncomfortable, it’s time to upgrade. A new mattress can make a world of difference to our health — particularly if you suffer from insomnia or pain.

You may have read Gina’s product review of a Tempur Sensation Elite mattress with Cooltouch. She did a lot of research when it was time to upgrade their mattress and ultimately decided to make the investment into a Tempur. More recently, she has also purchased several mattresses from Emma. Wherever you choose to shop, a quality mattress can literally change your life!

6. Give your bathroom a quick style

The first room we go to in the morning and often the last room we’re in before we go to bed at night is our bathroom. Yet, this is one room that often gets overlooked in the styling stakes.

Treating yourself to some beautiful bath products, fresh towels and an indoor plant is all it takes to create a more inviting space.

Find loads of bathroom styling inspiration and our top tips in this article.

7. Restore an old piece of furniture

Impress yourself with an upcycle project! If you’ve got a drab piece of furniture that’s still got good bones, you could get crafty and give it a new look.

From reupholstering to repainting, there are thousands of DIY tutorials you can check out online for inspiration. This dresser upcycle is one idea of what can be done.

8. Introduce more greenery

Indoor plants are always a good idea! From ferns to succulents, cactus to palms, there is an endless choice of plants you could choose but here are our top 20 hard to kill indoor plants.

9. Hang some new wall art

As Julia Green says “Art doesn’t always have to be behind glass” so when looking for new wall art, consider sculptural pieces or wall hangings as well.

There’s a huge range of affordable wall prints on the market today and if you really want to treat yourself, you could also commission an original artwork from a fave artist.

10. Light up your space

Like colour, lighting plays a big part in affecting how we feel in our home. If all the lighting in your home is from the ceiling, you may want to look at investing in some floor lamps or table lamps to introduce softer and more ambient lighting. Check out this post for all you need to know about creating a winning lighting plan.

11. Redress your bed

Fall in love with your bedroom again by giving your bed a hot new look. Select a quilt cover that ties into your new colour palette or fits with the new direction you want to take your interiors this year. Find a few cushions to complement the look and finish with a throw.

12. Refresh your window treatments

Window treatments looking more drab than fab? Make it a goal to replace them in 2026!

Not only can new window coverings transform the look of your interiors, they can also offer significant thermal benefits. This helps your home to be more comfortable year-round, reducing the need for heating and air-conditioning — saving you on costly energy bills! 13. Invest in a rug

You often hear us harp on about rugs and recently we posted a detailed guide on how to select the right rug.

“It will give your room more warmth and create the sense of a zone. Having defined spaces will make you feel like the layout of your home works better,” says Amy from The Real Estate Stylist.

14. Start using candles or a diffuser

Most of us have candles in our home as a decor piece but how often do you burn them? Life is short, burn the candles! Scent works on a subconscious level and creates ambience in our home in a way few other things can.

If candles aren’t your thing, perhaps picking up a diffuser or diffusing essential oils is an idea to try. Check out our guide to essential oils here. We also love burning incense and incense holders can be a beautiful decor piece!

15. Replace your cushions

When it comes to instant, low-cost updates in the home, there’s nothing better than simply replacing your cushions! Get a luxe look for less by switching foam inserts with feature cushions.

Temple & Webster and Urban Road are just some of our fave stores (and yes, we’re aware we have a cushion addiction!). As well as introducing some fresh colours or prints, we also suggest playing around with cushion shapes and sizes. Think rectangular and square, and possibly a ball cushion too!

16. Display photos

Personalise your interiors by putting your happiest memories on display. Too often in this digital age, we take photos but don’t make the time to print and frame them. Check out our 5 stylish ways to display photos around your home.

17. Keep on top of your house cleaning

Few people find house cleaning fun but we all know it’s the secret to keeping our homes feeling fresh, inviting and stylish.

We created a free cleaning checklist that breaks down all your daily, weekly and monthly cleaning tasks so you can keep your home in ‘clean enough’ state for longer (oh, and you’ll also find some of our favourite cleaning hacks in there too!).

18. Set up a new space to support your goal

What goals have you set yourself this year? Whether it’s to kick butt in business or take more time to relax and unwind, look at where you can create a dedicated space in your home to support this goal.

A little cosy nook or stylish office can be the reminder we need to keep working at those goals.

19. Switch cupboard handles

Perhaps you’d like to makeover your laundry, kitchen or bathroom buuuuut it’s just so expensive that you need to save for a bit longer?

Rapid Renovation Expert, Naomi Findlay, swears by the impact of new handles. She included this suggestion in ways to update your kitchen for less and 5 best cosmetic bathroom upgrades. You can find our round up of the best places to shop for new handles here.

20. Organise your pantry

A cluttered pantry can be a recipe for chaos, but taking a little time to reorganise not only looks fab but also makes cooking and meal prep a breeze.

Start by clearing everything out and tossing expired items (we’re looking at you, spice jar from 2015). Wipe down shelves, then group items by category — think baking supplies, snacks, and canned goods. Invest in clear containers or baskets to keep things tidy and visually appealing, and don’t forget to label them for easy access.

21. Give your garden some TLC

One of the best quick ways to freshen up your home is actually outside. Because if we’re being honest, technically your garden creates the first impression of your home. So if it’s looking unruly or just a bit neglected, why not pop on the gardening gloves and get stuck in. Defining gardening beds, topping up mulch and filling in sparse areas are a few easy ways to create big impact. We share everything to do in the garden by season in our gardening guides here.

If you don’t have a garden, perhaps starting a herb garden on your balcony or creating a more inviting front entrance could be ideas to try.

22. Style up your entry

Your entry can be beautiful and welcoming… or a neglected zone. So if your entry resembles a dumping ground or just has you feeling uninspired, why not give it a quick refresh?!

Creating a stylish entry is simple and a few tips are to:

  • have a tray or bowl of some kind to store keys and smaller items (often called a ‘catch all’ tray)
  • consider using a mirror or artwork to take advantage of wall space
  • incorporate greenery of some kind, flowers or foraged stems (as I used in the video below) look fab. Or an indoor plant is another great option.

Or if you want to go one better, why not create a dedicated drop zone or mudroom in your entry?! We’ve got all the inspo and design advice on how to create a mudroom or drop zone here.

23. Refresh your bookshelf or sideboard styling

When was the last time you switched up your bookshelf or sideboard styling? It’s easy to let pockets of the home become stale… especially when they were such a struggle to style in the first place! But if it’s been a year or more since you pulled everything out of your bookshelf or on a surface area like your sideboard, take this opportunity to switch things up.

We’re all about creating a sense of life and energy in the home and one way to do this is simply rearranging what you already have. Unlike some tips in this round up, this home refresh idea doesn’t cost a cent! Move objects between rooms or take a second look at what you have stashed away in cupboards — you might be pleasantly surprised to find some decor you’d forgotten about!

24. Paint your front door

If you just want to dip your toe into adding pops of colour to your home, try painting your front door!

From red to purple, pink and green — and everything in between — we have all the painted front door colour inspiration you need in this article. Oh and before you pick up a paint brush, be sure to check out our pro painting tips.

25. Give functional items an aesthetic glow up

Everyday items like tissue boxes, remotes and chargers are a necessary part of life… but they don’t have to bring down the aesthetic of your home! If you there are always things you always hide before guests come over or that make you cringe when you look at them, why not give them a quick glow up?

An easy and affordable DIY is to make your own tissue box cover and I’ve got tutorials on how to do that using tissue paper or tiles. Another simple fix is adding a stylish box to your coffee table where you can store (read: hide) your remote controls. Cables are another eyesore and can often be tucked away using cable clips or even eliminated altogether by switching to battery or rechargeable options. Small changes like these instantly make a room feel more considered without costing much at all.

26. Buy fresh flowers and open up the windows

Finally, give your home the quickest freshen up of all by treating yourself to a beautiful bunch of flowers and opening up the windows. The new trend in flowers is ‘intentional unarranged florals’ so feel free to take a more casual approach (some foraging perhaps?) and create your own perfectly imperfect floral arrangements.

A fresh breeze, sunshine and the sweet scent of flowers will be sure to boost your spirits. And make your freshly cut flowers last longer by following these tips.

Will you use any of our quick ways to freshen up your home? Or do you have additional ideas to refresh the home? We’d love you to share them in the comments below!

It’s time to dust away the cobwebs and get your outdoor areas sparkling ready for the warmer months ahead. I’m always looking for home cleaning hacks to make life easier and this extends to outside the home too. Because less time cleaning and more time enjoying life is always a good idea!

So keep reading as I share the best outdoor cleaning tips and tricks to have your outdoor areas looking new in no time. Whether you’re tackling the job yourself or considering the expertise of a commercial cleaning company, there are plenty of ways to get your outdoor spaces looking their best.

1. Best way to clean driveways and concrete paths

Concrete paths can become discoloured or stained over time. Yet a simple and natural solution can get them looking like new.

The best concrete cleaning recipe I’ve used is to combine bi-carb soda, dish soap and white vinegar directly onto the concrete and scrub. I use equal amounts of dish soap and bi-carb soda and then pour vinegar over to start the bubbling action.

For large areas it pays to have a scrubbing brush that can do the hard work for you… otherwise that next day muscle soreness can be a killer!

2. Easy hack to clean cobwebs

It’s amazing the difference cleaning cobwebs can make to the look of your home. And if you believe in Feng Shui, cobwebs are symbols of the past so clearing them away can also help clear your home of stuck energy.

A cheap hack to clean cobwebs is to slip an old sock over a broom. The sock helps to catch cobwebs more easily, makes clean up a breeze and can prevent possible scratches to your home’s exterior.

3. DIY streak-free windows solutions

Get your windows sparkling with this super easy solution.

Best window cleaning recipe:

  • 1 part warm water
  • 1 part white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol.

Mix the solutions together and watch how it cuts through dust and grime. White vinegar and rubbing alcohol are excellent cleaning agents and work perfectly to create a streak-free finish. Wipe on window and squeegee off.

4. Easy watermark removal hack

As another window cleaning hack, if you have any tough watermarks that just won’t budge, grab a spare toothbrush and white toothpaste. Apply the toothpaste to the watermark and gently polish it away.

5. Barbecue grill deep clean hack

With barbecue season here, it’s time to give your grill a deep clean. This is another area where I let the RYOBI power scrubber do the work, but you can accomplish the same result with a brush and muscle power.

Apply a small amount of dish soap and water and use a scrubbing brush to cut through built-up grime with ease. Finish with coat of vegetable oil to prevent rust. Now it’s ready to go when you are!

6. Easy window track cleaning tip

As well as cleaning windows, window and door tracks can benefit from a clean. Start by vacuuming up larger debris and dirt. Then wrap a damp microfibre cloth around a butter knife for the ultimate clean, getting into all those hard to reach places.

7. Natural snail and slug deterrent

There are so many clever gardening hacks out there but one of my personal favourites is this natural spray. Add 20 drops of Cedarwood oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz over your plants and outdoor areas. This essential oil will deter snails, slugs and ants and help protect your outdoor spaces. If you’re dealing with a more stubborn infestation, professional pest control services can offer a more comprehensive solution while still being mindful of your garden.

8. Easy fly screen cleaning hack

Normally a pain to clean, this hack doesn’t require you to remove fly screens from the frame to clean them. Simply vacuum the fly screen with a soft bristle brush and then wipe clean with a damp microfibre cloth.

9. Expert outdoor grout joint clean

Grout joints can become extremely discoloured over time. Renew outdoor tiled areas using this effective grout cleaning solution.

Make the best grout cleaner by mixing:

  • 1/2 cup of bi-carb
  • 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tsp dish soap.

Apply it onto the joints and leave for 5 minutes before scrubbing clean.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen these DIY Halloween pumpkin lanterns 🎃 This latest Kmart hack Halloween project ticks all the right boxes — simple, affordable and stylish! Using Kmart’s budget-friendly plastic pumpkins, a couple of cans of spray paint, and some puck lights, you can create glowing lanterns that look luxe but cost next to nothing.

Whether you line them up along your footpath or style them in your entryway, they’ll instantly set the spooky season mood. Watch my video below to see how I transformed these pumpkins step-by-step or keep scrolling for all the materials and instructions.

Materials you’ll need:

  • Plastic Halloween pumpkins (I used the Kmart ones)
  • Puck lights (battery-operated)
  • Black spray paint
  • Silver spray paint
  • Small paint brush

Steps:

1. Spray paint the pumpkins black

Start by giving your plastic pumpkins an even coat of black spray paint. I did two light coats to make sure the colour was deep and even. This creates that luxe matte base that instantly takes the pumpkins from cheap plastic to chic and spooky.

2. Add silver accents

Once the black paint is completely dry, it’s time to bring out the details. Using your silver spray paint, lightly mist accents onto the pumpkin — I focused on the inner eyes and along the natural indents.

This gives your pumpkins more depth and dimension, and the metallic gleam catches the light when they’re illuminated. You can also use a small paint brush to add a little more definition or highlight certain areas for a more dramatic effect.

3. Add the lights and style

Pop a puck light inside each pumpkin, and voilà — instant lanterns! These look incredible lining your footpath to welcome trick-or-treaters or clustered by your front door for a more modern Halloween display.

If you’re entertaining, you could even style them inside by your entryway or on a console table for ambient lighting that brings the spooky vibes.

I love how these turned out — they’re the perfect balance of moody and minimal. This Kmart hack Halloween idea proves you don’t need to spend much (or go over the top) to make your home feel festive. Plus, since the pumpkins are plastic, you can reuse them year after year.
