Whether you’ve got limited space or simply want your home to function more efficiently, multifunctional furniture is one of the most underrated design solutions. From occasional chairs that fold away to ottomans and side tables that double as extra seating, flexible pieces can make a noticeable difference to how your home feels and functions day to day.

And one of the most impactful? An extendable dining table. With a simple adjustment, these tables can go from everyday family use to comfortably seating a larger group in seconds, making them a smart choice for modern Australian homes where flexibility is key.

Timber extendable dining table

The real cost of the oversized table

Let’s be honest about what a massive dining table actually costs you, beyond the price tag.

For roughly 350 days of the year, a ten-seater table in a three-person household is taking up precious floor space without offering much in return… other than perhaps a very large, very expensive shelf. In interior designer, we often talk about ‘negative space’ (the breathing room around furniture) and how important it is to make a room feel calm and considered. An oversized table in most households takes up this negative space year-round. It can obstruct flow between your kitchen and living, creating uncomfortable pinch points you need to navigate around just to move through your home.

There’s also the clutter trap. A big, underused flat surface is basically a magnet for unopened mail, school bags, and laundry that needs folding. We’ve all been there.

The good news is you don’t have to choose between a table that seats your family of three and one that can handle a long Sunday lunch with the whole crew.

How extendable tables have changed

If the words ‘extendable table’ give you mental images of two people wrestling a heavy frame and fetching extra pieces of a tabletop from storage, think again.

Modern extension mechanisms have come a long way. Retailers like POVISON offer designs with concealed butterfly or hidden-track systems built directly into the table frame, so there are no loose parts to store, nothing to retrieve, and no construction required. A single person can expand a four-seater into an eight-seater in under 10 seconds with a smooth, one-handed pull.

Design-wise this matters too. Cleaner mechanisms don’t intrude on the table’s aesthetic and look cleaner overall when extended. Because the last thing you want when hosting a big group is to feel like you’re sitting around a table that’s been pieced together!

Stone and sintered stone top extendable dining table designs fit a range of interior styles

Choosing the right style for Australian interiors

Extendable dining tables come in a wide range of looks, and the right one depends on the overall feel of your space.

Timber remains the most popular choice in Australian homes and for good reason. This material brings warmth, texture, and a connection to natural materials that suits our relaxed aesthetic beautifully. Look for solid timber or quality timber veneer rather than MDF with a timber-look finish, which tends to show wear much faster. If your dining table is exposed to direct sunlight, cheaper MDF dining tables can also warp, peel and discolour. Round or oval extensions work particularly well in open-plan layouts as they soften the visual weight of a large table.

Stone and sintered stone tops are having a serious moment right now, and they suit the luxe, contemporary Australian look very well. They’re a popular option for aesthetic and practical reasons. The veining and colour palette aligns with natural material trends while non-porous surfaces don’t stain, don’t need sealing, and can take a hot dish straight from the oven without concern. For households who use their dining table as a multifunctional surface, such as homework, craft projects and work-from-home overflow, this type of dining table could be the best option.

Powder-coated steel bases pair beautifully with both timber and stone tops, and add an architectural, slightly industrial edge that works in contemporary and mid-century styled rooms alike. They’re also typically more durable than solid timber legs over the long term.

Practical things to check before you buy

Not all extendable tables are created equal, and a few things are worth looking at closely before you commit.

The extension mechanism should feel smooth and require minimal effort. If it sticks or requires two people to operate when new, expect this to get harder over time. We always suggest testing the table out in store if possible, or look for video reviews online.

Check how the table looks when extended. Some cheaper designs develop a slight bow in the middle, or show a visible join that detracts from the overall look. The best designs are engineered to remain completely flat and level across the full length.

Think about proportions. A table that seats four comfortably at 150cm and extends to eight at 250cm is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but only if the width keeps pace. A table that becomes very long but remains narrow can feel awkward. Allow at least 70–75cm of width per side for comfortable seating.

Finally, consider your chairs. Stackable or lightweight chairs that tuck away neatly mean you can pull out extras for a dinner party without them taking up permanent floor space in the meantime. Bentwood, rattan, or slim metal frames are all good options.

The design payoff

There’s something genuinely freeing about a dining space that adapts to your lifestyle rather than dictating how you use it. Compact during the week, it keeps your floor plan open and your home feeling spacious. Extended on the weekend, it becomes the generous, welcoming table that makes a long lunch feel effortless.

In Australian homes, especially, where alfresco living is so central to how we entertain, having an indoor table that flexes means you’re not trying to split guests awkwardly between inside and outside. Everyone can sit together, which is kind of the whole point.

Choosing the right dining table is about more than just size — it’s about how your home functions every day. An extendable design offers the flexibility to balance both, giving you a space that feels open and practical during the week, and generous and welcoming when you’re entertaining.

One of the most effective ways to add a sense of drama to the home is by incorporating the colour black. And using black paint is the most affordable way to do just that! Play it safe with a black painted door OR go bold and embrace black walls!

Going black on the walls is a trick designers use because it makes a big statement… without spending big! Come and be inspired as we share the zones of the home where black walls work effortlessly. We also list our fave black paints and share top interiors styling tips when going bold with black.

Black walls — in the living room

The first zone of the home where black walls look right at home is in your living room.

Be bold and embrace it on all 4 walls to create a powerful statement or dip your toe in with just a feature wall or two. Yes, we know many designers are saying feature walls are out but they still serve a purpose and work particularly well when you mix up the material. For example, a living room with one timber panel wall or brick wall painted black and the other walls of plaster kept white or another neutral shade.

Here are some stunning living rooms you’re bound to fall for.

Modern traditional

This home is the perfect example of traditional (intricate mouldings and that sofa) vs modern (everything else you can see in the space!). It’s absolutely divine and we can’t get enough!

Sleek and downright sexy

If ever a room could be described as sexy… this would be it. This black on black statement home from Biasol is elegant, sophisticated and sleek as anything. See the full home tour here.

Panel me black

Black panelled feature walls are not something that immediately springs to mind, but we are here for it! It makes a statement and the panelling pairs it back, adding texture and interest.

Liven up black with plants

There’s no denying black walls are bold. But they also don’t have to dominate a space, as shown here in DIY Shelley’s living room. She softens the space with light sheer curtains, natural accents and plenty of greenery.

Indoor plants are a favourite of ours, as they breathe life into a space (literally!) and a pop of greenery. Check out this article on the top 10 trending indoor plants and our indoor plant care tips here.

Painted brick

We love a bit of exposed brick, but sometimes it needs a lick of paint to bring it back to life. Using a black feature wall at the end of a room, tricks the eye into seeing the space as longer than it is as black recedes. The black joinery on either side of the room ties the space together.

This office space pares leather, timber and black painted brick walls and we’re loving it. So simple, so classic.

Beach vibes

When we envision beach vibes, we immediately think white or shades of blue or green. But let’s flip that on its head, because who says beachy can’t be black?!

The exposed beams, sheer curtains, natural fibres and touch of rattan… this room oozes coastal with being cliche.

If you lust after panelled feature walls, be sure to check out this article where the inspo keeps on coming!

Black walls — in the bedroom

The next zone of the home where we’re advocates for using black is in the bedroom. It’s a fab way to dial up the luxe vibes and instantly creates a moody space you want to retreat to. Let’s get inspired!

Hotel luxe

Did you catch the bedroom makeover Gina recently gave one of her friends? She created a custom square panel feature wall and painted it in a warm black (‘Black Felt’ by Dulux) to create a sophisticated and inviting feel.

Sophisticated style

Doesn’t this space just make you want to sink into bed and relax?! As well as black walls, black has also been used around the ceiling detail to provide extra emphasis and draw your eye upwards.

The final zone of the home where you can’t go wrong with black walls is the dining room. Get inspired to dine in style with these beautiful black walled dining rooms.

Archway goals

Arches are certainly having a moment in design right now and while they are generally painted white, check out this dining room to see how painting them black adds impact with the way different shadows are cast! It perfectly frames the tiled splashback feature beyond.

Intimate dining room

Nowadays dining rooms are generally part of a larger open plan area but if yours is a separate room like this one, why not embrace it by painting all the walls and ceiling black! Paired with metallic accents, herringbone floor and statement lighting, this dining room puts a whole new spin on elegance.

Scandi sleek

To create a Scandi-style dining room, you may think it’s best to keep things light and airy. This black feature wall proves dark colours can still feel Scandi, just stick to natural materials and minimalist styling.

Flip tradition on its head

A classic way to add style and character in any dining room is with a half-wall of panelling or wainscoating. What’s unique about this space, is the wall panelling is kept traditional and white, and the rest of the wall and ceiling have been painted in feature black.

It’s a different spin on what would otherwise have been a very traditional looking dining space. Clever. Simple. Gorgeous.

Eclectic and vintage

We added this dining room to the mix to show the versatility of black paint. By now you’ve seen it works beautifully in sleek and modern homes, coastal homes, period homes, and yes, even eclectic homes too!

This tub has stolen our hearts, but it works beautifully against the black walls in this bathroom. The texture on the wall tiles, frame of the mirror and rattan in the light fixture create so much interest in this unique bathroom space.

Black and white is a typical colour combo in Scandi styling. The touches of timber in the desk, chair and decor warm up the space and add an element of brightness against the solid black.

Best black paint colours for interiors

Now that you’re sold on the look, let’s talk paint colour. Just as there’s no such thing as ‘white paint’ the same rings true for black paint. Some blacks throw more blue or green tones, while others appear more grey. Test a few samples on your walls to see how they look in different lighting throughout the day to make sure you make the right choice.

To help you pick the best black paint for walls in your home, here are some of our fave choices:

Interior styling tips — How to style with black walls

You’ve got the inspo, you’ve chosen your paint and you’re fully committed. Now what?! There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to styling your space to enhance those gorgeous black painted walls.

Choose the right wall to paint

Will you go for black feature walls or commit to the entire room? A feature wall can add drama and focus to a space without overwhelming it. Painting the entire room black creates a more immersive, cosy environment.

Don’t forget to think about the rooms natural light. Black paint tends to make a space feel smaller, so it’s best to use it in rooms with plenty of light or in a room where you want to create a moody, more intimate atmosphere.

Consider the finish

When it comes to painting black walls, the finish you choose can significantly impact the final look of your walls. Do you want matte, satin or gloss?

A matte finish gives a sophisticated, velvety look, but can be less forgiving of marks and smudges.

Satin finishes offer a subtle sheen that reflects light, without being too shiny. This is a great all-round choice.

If you want to create some real drama, go for gloss. Although be aware it will highlight imperfections on the wall surfaces.

Think about trims and doors

For that sleek and seamless look, consider painting the trim, doors and even the ceiling in the same shade of black. This creates a space that is cohesive, cosy and dramatic.

You could also consider a contrasting look by keeping the trim and doors a lighter shade. Consider white, or a soft grey to frame the walls and create a level of visual interest.

Let there be light

Dark walls can absorb light, so it’s essential to balance them with adequate lighting. Natural lighting is best, however additional light sources are also vital to make sure your space doesn’t feel dark and cramped.

Overhead lights, wall sconces and table lamps will keep the room feeling bright and welcoming.

Decorate with style

Now for the fun part! To prevent your room from feeling too heavy, go for lighter or metallic decor. Think mirrors, artwork and furniture to add contrast. Pieces like the Koala bedside tables also work beautifully with black walls, offering a clean, modern profile and natural texture that helps soften the dramatic colour palette. Pop in some soft textures like velvets, cushions and rugs to add warmth and help balance your space against those dark walls.

We love how sheer curtains add softness and instantly elevate any space, but they need regular cleaning to stay fresh. Dust and allergens build up over time… and if like us you have small children, well all sorts of dirt can end up on them too! Through necessity we’ve had to test and try every method to clean and wash sheer curtains, and surprisingly it’s a lot simpler than you’d think!

Get your curtains back to looking their best by following our simple guide to wash and clean sheer curtains. Oh and if you have any other tips and tricks, we’d love you to share them in the comments so we can keep adding to this article over time.

Sheer curtains in the bedroom
Even extra long sheer curtains can be washed in your washing machine

How often should you wash sheer curtains?

Wash sheer curtains at least once a year, and we suggest doing this in spring as part of your deep clean routine.

If you keep your windows open regularly or you have small children and pets in the home, you may want to wash your curtains more frequently, like every three to six months. Also, if they are near a kitchen, you’ll probably want to clean them more often. Regular washing keeps sheer curtains bright and extends their lifespan, and creates a healthier home.

Can you machine wash sheer curtains?

Spoiler alert, our trick to effortlessly cleaning your sheer curtains is to simply put them in the washing machine!

Most sheer curtains are machine washable, but always check the care label first. Our sheer curtains are polyester and we’ve washed them in the machine for years without any problems. If your sheer curtains are made from natural linen or another type of fabric, it’s best to check with the manufacturer to see if the fabric of your curtains is machine washable.

Watch the reel below or follow our step-by-step guide on the best way to wash your sheer curtains.

Step-by-step guide to washing sheer curtains

1. Remove dust before washing

Shake out sheer curtains or use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. This prevents dust from turning into grime during washing.

It’s easy to remove sheer curtains by simply unclipping them from the curtain track. Depending on your curtain style, such as S fold or eyelet, the technique to remove them will differ slightly.

If like us you have S fold, you will remove the curtain fabric with the plastic clips attached (fixed into the head of the curtain fabric). Pinch each bracket firmly with your thumb and index finger as you push out the clip towards you.

2. Choose the right detergent

Rather than using laundry detergent, we use one cup of white vinegar in the barrel of the machine and 15 drops of eucalyptus oil added to the detergent compartment of the washing machine. This natural cleaning formula is mild yet effective and leaves your curtains smelling amazing.

Some people prefer to use a mild liquid detergent. For example, we would suggest a brand like Koala Eco.

Tip: avoid harsh chemicals as they can weaken delicate fabrics and cause fading. Also don’t overdo the cleaning products — it’s better to use less so it gets rinsed out fully to prevent residue from making the fabric stiff or discoloured.

3. Machine wash on a gentle cycle

Wash sheer curtains in cold water using a delicate or hand wash cycle. Set the machine to a slow spin to avoid stretching.

4. Hand wash if necessary

For extra delicate sheer curtains, such as those made from pure linen, hand wash them in cold water with a small amount of detergent. Swirl gently and avoid scrubbing.

5. Air dry immediately

Finally, hang sheer curtains while damp to prevent wrinkles. Rather than hanging them on the washing line, we simply reattach the curtains to the track. This saves a step in the cleaning process, while protecting them from sun damage or getting a crease in them from hanging them on a line.

Tip: keep the door open or run a dehumidifier while your sheers are drying to prevent dampness.

How to remove stains from sheer curtains

For stubborn stains, you may need to do a spot clean or additional cleaning step before washing your curtains in the machine. For example, we recently had to remove ink pen from our office sheers. We did this using the same cleaning trick to remove ink from regular fabric, by hitting the stain with rubbing alcohol and rinsing it clean. Repeating this step 2-3 times lifted the stain, and then we followed the washing steps above.

The steps to remove stains from sheer curtains will depend on what type of stain it is, and we cover the most common stain removal hacks in this article.

Tip: always avoid bleach, as it weakens fabric and causes yellowing.

Tips to keep sheer curtains clean longer:

  • vacuum sheer curtains regularly to remove dust
  • avoid smoking or burning candles or incense near sheer curtains
  • keep windows closed during high pollen seasons or days that are windy. Alternatively, you can draw the curtains open and stacked to the side of your window to prevent them from catching dirt or pollen on these days.

Were you surprised to find out you can wash sheer curtains in the machine? Or perhaps you have a different technique to clean your curtains? We’d love you to share your tips in the comments below.

Understanding your space and needs

To find the perfect spot, consider the golden rule of design: form follows function. What does that mean? In simple terms, it’s about prioritising function (aka your practical needs) before form (aesthetics).

So before deciding on a location, you should first think about how you’ll use your wine fridge.

Do you want easy access when cooking?

Are you looking to show off your collection to guests?

Or do you need a practical spot to store your wines?

Your answers will help guide where you put your at-home wine fridges.

Best locations for your wine fridge

The kitchen

The kitchen is often the most practical place for a wine fridge. When you’re cooking and entertaining, having drinks within reach makes serving more effortless.

  • Below the benchtop: many wine fridges are designed to be the perfect height of a base cabinet. So when designing a new kitchen or renovating an existing one, reserving a space below the benchtop works exceptionally well. It achieves a clean and streamlined look, and prioritises convenience.
  • In a pantry: if you have a walk-in pantry, you can create a dedicated wine storage area without taking up precious kitchen space. Gina did this in her butler’s pantry.
  • End of a counter run: a standalone appliance can make the awkward space at the end of your kitchen counter purposeful.

The dining room

Putting your wine fridge in the dining room makes sense if you enjoy formal dining and want your wines near where you’ll serve them.

Consider these dining spots locations:

  • built into a buffet or sideboard
  • as part of a bar set up along one wall
  • in a corner nook with a serving surface above it.

Living areas

A wine fridge in your living room or family room can be a great addition, especially if you often have guests over.

Some good spots include:

  • as part of an entertainment centre
  • in a dedicated bar area
  • built into custom cabinetry
  • near the conversation area for easy access during gatherings.

Places to avoid

Knowing where to put your wine fridge is just as important as knowing where not to put it.

Avoid putting a wine fridge in these locations:

  • The garage: temperature swings are too extreme and can harm your wine
  • Next to your regular fridge: the heat from your refrigerator can make your wine fridge work harder
  • Direct sunlight: UV rays and heat can affect both the wine and the fridge’s performance
  • Near heat sources: stay away from ovens, radiators, and heating vents.

Technical considerations when choosing spots for wine fridge

When choosing your spot, remember these practical points.

Ventilation

Your wine fridge needs room to breathe. Most units vent from the front but check your model’s requirements.

Usually, you’ll need:

  • at least 5cm of space at the back
  • about 1cm on each side
  • some clearance at the top if it’s built-in.

Power access

Make sure you have a proper electrical outlet nearby. Avoid using extension cords, as they can be unsafe for appliances.

If you’re doing a built-in installation, you might need an electrician to add an outlet.

Temperature stability

Choose a spot where the room temperature stays relatively steady. Big temperature swings make your wine fridge work harder and use more energy.

Interior design tips

Your wine fridge can add to your home’s look when placed thoughtfully.

Here are some simple ways to make it look great:

Lighting

  • Add some LED strips around your wine fridge to show off your bottles
  • Use under-cabinet lighting if your wine fridge sits below the cabinets
  • Put a small lamp nearby to create a warm glow around the area.

Seamless coordination

  • Try to match your wine fridge finish with your other kitchen appliances
  • Pick handles and hardware that go with your existing cabinet fixtures
  • If you’re getting a new wine fridge, look for one that matches your kitchen style.

Creating a serving area

  • Keep a small tray near your wine fridge for glasses and bottle openers
  • Add a shelf above or next to it for storing glassware
  • Leave some counter space nearby for opening and pouring wine.

Making it practical

  • Make sure you can walk around easily when the door is open
  • Keep the top clear if you want to use it as a serving surface
  • Check that you can easily reach all the shelves in your wine fridge.

Our final tip, you don’t need fancy additions to make your wine fridge look good. Sometimes, the SIMPLEST setup works best as long as it’s neat and works well with your space.

Sleek in buit appliances in kitchen design
Guy Sebastian’s kitchen is a shining example how to use built-in appliances

Making your final decision

When you’ve narrowed down your options, ask yourself:

Can I easily get to the wine when I need it?

Does this location make sense for how I use wine in my home?

Will the fridge fit properly and have good ventilation?

Does it look good in the space?

We hope this article helped you decide where to put a wine fridge. Remember, the perfect spot combines practical needs with your home’s style. Don’t rush the decision — take time to imagine how you’ll use it in different locations before settling on the best spot for you. With good planning, your wine fridge can be both a practical appliance and an attractive addition to your home.

Wallpaper and wall murals are easy ways to add character to a dull room, to soften a harsh space with texture and to give your interior an instant facelift. But for the uninitiated, it’s hard to know where to start!

We spoke to Frank Tarulli, Director at Thomas Archer, and Aimee Tarulli, Interior Stylist at Thomas Archer and Archer Interiors, about their tricks of the trade.

Office wallpaper

“We’re finding more and more clients looking for ways to create interest and texture in their homes,” Frank says.

“Wallpaper can be a relatively inexpensive way of adding detail without the need for more permanent options like wall claddings or specialist finishes.”

Aimee agrees wallpaper is a great option for renovators and people embarking on a new build as it provides bang for your buck.

“Wallpaper patterns can be brilliant at creating drama in a space.

“You can create a really big impact with relatively little fuss and low cost.”

“We’re now seeing bold prints, tangible textures and even hard finished like cladding or moulding being re-created as wallpaper — often at a fraction of the cost of the real thing.”

What are your ‘rules’ when it comes to using wallpaper?

Aimee warns the most important thing is to consider the end use of the space and choose a design accordingly.

“If the room is a tranquil setting, choose a calming pattern and colour — or even a lovely texture,” Aimee says.

“If the room is playful like a children’s room or play room you could go wild with bolder prints or colours. Ultimately there are no rules and the bonus is it’s easy to change down the track if you decide you want a different look.”

Frank only has one rule — always get wallpaper professionally installed.

“It’s trickier than it looks and it pays to get a professional wallpaper hanger to install it,” he cautions.

“Think about lining up patterns and cutting around power points. It needs to be perfect.”

Boho Art and Styling wallpaper bedroom

How do you pick a wallpaper that won’t date too quickly?

“I always advise my clients not to worry too much about trends of things dating,” Aimee says.

“If you love it, choose it. You will always get enjoyment out of something you love, rather than choosing something based on its timeless appeal.”

Aimee suggests that if choosing wallpaper for a children’s room, avoid anything overly childish, and ‘style up’ instead.

“Selecting a pattern or design that will suit them as they grow is the best way to go,” she says.

“Look for something with a playful appeal that will suit them now but also in 5 years’ time.”

That’s a polite way of saying, avoid traditional ‘baby’ style wallpaper. You know, the ones with bears or alphabet prints and opt for something a little more sophisticated. A graphic print, floral or botanical scene, or watercolour-style wallpaper will serve you better in the long term. If you feel like something more playful for bub, removable decals are a fabulous alternative.

Abstract waves wallpaper

Temporary  vs. permanent wallpaper?

Aimee says it will ultimately depend on the design you are looking for.

“I would be led by a style you love and then work out its application and how best to install.

“The design options for permanent wallpaper are far greater. However, if you are looking for a quick way to update your rooms look without the worry of it being permanent, temporary wallpaper is quick and easy and will mean you can take it down yourself.

“Temporary wallpapers are great for kid’s rooms, and for people not yet in their forever home.”

Is it ever a good idea to DIY wallpaper?

Both Aimee and Frank suggest approaching DIY wallpaper with great caution.

“If you’re anything like me and suffer from little patience, it’s never a good idea to DIY wallpaper,” laughs Aimee.

“You need an incredible amout of patience and precision.

“I would only ever attempt it if the pattern was quite simple and the wall was free from power points or anything that would require the wallpaper to be cut in.”

Top 5 tips for for wallpaper installation

  1. If you decide to tackle it yourself, choose a simple design that will allow you to match up the sheets easily
  2. Lay the pattern out on a large floor space so you can plan the drops exactly
  3. Measure everything before you start to ensure the correct material measurements
  4. Apply the glue with a roller and lay the wallpaper out on a trestle table to make glue application easy
  5. Have patience!

Luxury doesn’t have to be OTT… actually, in our opinion, it’s refined design details that achieve the most luxurious spaces. This breakfast nook with thoughtful trim details, divine upholstery and custom dining table create the perfect dining nook.

Contemporary Australian

Our favourite style by far, it’s hard not to love the restrained, design-forward and warm vibes of contemporary Australian design. Contemporary design is defined by what’s in here and now. And right now in Australia, it’s all about custom joinery, warm tones, layered material palettes and elevated lighting fixtures.

Pattern on pattern

Go bold or go home, right?!

This elegant and timeless breakfast nook plays on pattern with the floor tile and two types of fabric upholstering the bench seat. The restrained and consistent colour palette makes it work. And the beautiful use of timber adds warmth to the space while that light ups the luxe factor.

Mid-century meets modern boho

The resurgence of mid-century design continues to gain moment and looking at the pic below, it’s easy to see why!

Classic furniture pieces, graphic design textiles, and clean and simple styling are all characteristic of this style.

Palm Springs vibes

Mid-century modern meets breezy and bright, this stunning breakfast nook designed by Interior Designer Lee Talbot of @mavenhome_ is the epitome of #breakfastnookgoals! Designed for her family of 6, that long custom bench is stylish and functional.

The Block-inspired

If you’ve been following the Block this year, you may recognise this breakfast nook from Mitch and Mark. While we may not have loved everything about this kitchen, this nook has a real beachy contemporary feel with it’s neutral colour palette and rattan furniture.

Find plenty more photos of The Block kitchen reveals here.

Coastal

Embrace coastal vibes in your breakfast nook with a tranquil blue colour palette, warm timbers (particularly in blonde or distressed finishes), and ocean inspired artwork.

Coastal luxe

Or perhaps you prefer a more elevated coastal look? Coastal luxe is a fusion design style that takes the key characteristics of coastal design — light and bright palette, timbers and natural materials — and reinterprets them in a modern and sophisticated way. Generally, there’s less use of ocean tones and colour with greater use of white to effortlessly achieve a luxe yet inviting and family-friendly atmosphere.

Masculine minimalism

Showcasing how less is often more, we love this restrained breakfast nook with floating timber bench seat and pops of black.

Those lights add an architectural feel and offer better task lighting than traditional downlights should you need to use the space to do desk work.

Indoor outdoor

Let’s just stop for a moment to appreciate this jaw-dropping space!

That glass ceiling is a stroke of genius and creates the sense of bringing the outdoors in.

Farmhouse influences

Do it once and do it right! This breakfast nook ignores the trends and sticks to classic and elegant elements that will stand the test of time.

Vintage glam

Antique Persian rugs with retro inspired lighting has never looked so right!

The natural stone fireplace hearth and pop of metallic in the wall light add the right amount of glam.

Mediterranean vibes

There’s no denying the strong influence of Mediterranean design in Australia right now. Earthy and rebalancing, timeless and understated, there’s a lot to love about the design style. The Reno Queens at Three Birds Renovation show how you can pull off the look without going OTT!

Modern

Proving you can incorporate a breakfast nook into open design.

This nook also takes advantage of the wall cavities to create in-built niches rather than opting for floating shelves that are more commonly seen.

Vignettes or styled arrangements add interest to surface areas of your home. They are a way of displaying some of your favourite objects to create focal points of interest in rooms. Think on your coffee table, sideboard, kitchen bench, bedside table, in a bookshelf… just about anywhere! When used throughout a home, these connecting style threads tell your story, also making them a fab way to personalise your home.

There’s no right or wrong way to style a vignette but let me share with you my top tips to create a more elevated look. Keep on scrolling for my advice on how to style a vignette!

How to style a vignette in the kitchen
A kitchen vignette I styled in a recent kitchen project | Take the tour

Pick your home decor

In its most simplest form, a vignette has one large, one medium and one small object. For example, a table lamp, photo frame and candle. However, you can create larger and more layered vignettes by using a greater number of home accessories.

The most popular items to use in a styled vignette:

  • lamp
  • candle
  • oil burner
  • indoor plant
  • photo frame
  • small artwork
  • crystal
  • coral
  • sculptural item
  • stack of books
  • vase of flowers
  • ceramic object
  • glass decor
  • stack of coasters
  • glass cloche
  • wick trimmer
  • candle snuffer
  • bead garland.

You can also use functional items, like the salt and pepper grinders I used in the kitchen vignette above.

Check out this article on the top 50 items of home decor for even more ideas.

Tips on how to style a vignette
Sideboard vignette including books, crystal, candle, candle wick trimmer and ivy plant

Start with a base

One of my favourite vignette styling tricks is to use start with a base, such as a tray, trivet or stack of books. By placing smaller home decor on a base, it makes the styled arrangement look more intentional, as though the items belong. Otherwise, you can end up appearing as though you’ve just randomly grouped a few items together.

Using a base also adds visual layers to your vignette. And as I’ve said over and over, layering is one of the best ways to elevate your styling. It instantly gives any styling more confidence and sophistication.

It’s also possible to stand your base upright and sit it behind your vignette. For example, in the kitchen vignette above, I placed an upright cutting board behind which anchors the arrangement. Alternatively, you may lean a small artwork behind a vignette on a sideboard.

Mix height and scale

Great vignette styling is all about contrast — tall with low objects, delicate with solid.

Look for a mix of decor in a range of heights and varying visual weights. Visually heavy objects could include a solid stone bowl or chunky table lamp, whereas examples of light objects are slim candlesticks or wick trimmers.

At a minimum, a vignette should have one tall, one medium and one small item. I generally like to use at least 5-9 objects in a vignette… any more than that and it can appear too cluttered.

Work in odd numbers and don’t over-clutter your arrangement. Using 3-9 home accessories is a good rule of thumb.

Vignette
Simple vignette of 3 objects on a marble tray that I styled for a client

Incorporate different materials

Another way to create contrast is to mix up the materials of the home decor. For example, glass, concrete, ceramic, metal, timber etc.

If all the decor is the same material, your arrangement can appear flat. Or worse, if everything is glass or metal, it can appear cold and hard. Not exactly the feeling we want to create in our homes!

I also suggest including a few tactile objects in the mix, ie not perfectly formed. Some of my favourites include woven baskets, coral, crystal or natural ceramic decor.

Create interest by playing with materials. Combine cold (eg glass or metal) with warm (eg timber and clay) decor for depth.

Inject life

If by this point you haven’t already included an element of life into your vignette, do it!

Using living elements in any area of the home creates a connection to nature, helping to create a more relaxing environment. It also adds visual softness, adding to a sense of ease.

In a vignette, I’ll often use a vase of flowers or foraged branches, indoor plant, coral, or even a burning candle (flame).

Kitchen vignette
Foraged stems and bowl of fruit adds life to this vignette in my kitchen | Adding life is one of our favourite tips on how to style a vignette

Edit and refine

Finally, I always suggest standing back to edit. Ask yourself, is it too busy or bland? Should the items be clustered closer together or further apart? Is anything jarring or sticking out for the wrong reasons?

A tip to help you edit and refine your vignette is to take a photo of it. This might sound weird, but the change of perspective you get from looking at a photo on your phone can help you spot the issue immediately.

I hope my tips on how to style a vignette are useful and help you to add interest to pockets of your home. Do you have any questions on how to create a styled arrangement that I didn’t cover? Pop a comment below and I’ll get back to you asap.

Glorious arches

The arch, the elegant square tiles, the simple lighting. We loooove this look from Kirsty and Jesse from The Block 2021. It’s pared back elegance that would suit a variety of home styles such as Hamptons, coastal or modern.

Likewise, we were blown away when we spied this beauty from First Avenue homes, pictured below. Finished with custom-made steel framed doors, black timber veneer wine storage, marble bench and splashback, and brass glass hangers. It’s stunning!

Divine dining

We feel like this set up is so gorge that it could pass as a display in a restaurant. The chevron design is ideal for storing wine and just begs for regular wine deliveries to keep it in tip top shape!

Ready and waiting

Be prepared and ready for any occasion by incorporating a wine fridge into your kitchen design. We love the idea of a built-in wine fridge in the kitchen. They just seem to elevate a kitchen and make it feel 10 x more luxe.

Bar smart

If you’re planning a renovation, why not think about including a bar in your home design? Whether it be in the living room, dining room or kitchen, a set up like this could be just the ticket to elevate your home to the next level.

Timber wine storage pared with a marble splash back and small wet area. It’s timeless elegance.

Double trouble

When you’ve got the space, a double-door walk-in wine cooler is just what the doctor (or in this case, interior designer!) ordered. We love the addition of the timber wine storage boxes against the chic black walls and doors.

Island getaway

Wine racks are a clever addition that can be incorporated into your kitchen island. They’re not only practical, they also look great and are a wonderful way to break up the space, particularly if you’ve got an extra large island.

And they keep your favourite drop within an arm’s reach. Case closed!

Reach for the stars

There’s just something so special (and fancy) about a room with a ladder, don’t you think?! And how about this for a wine storage idea?

Simple box shelving, sky-high. But really, it’s the addition of the glass doors and timber ladder that stole our hearts. It’s epic, but we’re here for it.

Cellar dreaming

If you’re blessed with space below, a cellar in the basement is a total vibe. As seen on The Block, the contestants showed us how a wine cellar could be sophisticated, funky or sexy-sleek.

Small but stylish

To the complete other end of the scale, if you don’t have ample space to work with, there’s no need to get disheartened. You can still have a bar, complete with wine storage no matter what size space you’ve got.

Take this example as seen in the Erskineville renovation project Gina completed in Sydney. Previously an awkward desk space, she transformed it into a sleek bar, complete with the wine fridge the home owners had always dreamed of having.

Or this modern farmhouse style bar space that underwent a complete transformation in a renovation from Neon White Design.

Complete contrasts

If matchy-matchy isn’t really your thing, Three Birds have you covered. In another of their incredible home renos, they designed a black, moody wine space next to a light and bright bar area with brass accents.

Perforated perfection

It’s not a material you spy very often. So when we came across this perforated brass bar set up, it was too elegant to pass up. Yes, we’ll admit we don’t see any wine storage but think those timber cabinets underneath would do the job nicely. So you can’t really blame us for including this stunner, now can you?!

Black beauty

This wine storage is simple, but oh so sleek. We’re especially loving the backlights to make a real feature of the bottles on display. And that sliding black and glass barn-style door is such a cool featured too.

Leather luxe

Just take a moment and imagine having this as your dining room!

Those custom-made leather wrapped slimline handles by MadeMeasure, shaker profile walnut joinery… and that wine collection! It’s a stunning space that takes wine storage to the luxe level.

Hideaway bar with pocket door

Be ready to entertain with this slick bar set up. Featuring charcoal timber veneer cabinetry, marble benchtop, a mirrored splashback and bi-fold pocket door.

Or another beauty below, with its elegant fluted glass backsplash and light timber cabinetry which also showcases the cool pocket door feature.

Pocket doors are perfect if you don’t want your wine or bar on show all the time as they allow you to hide it all away neatly and discreetly. You’ll find more pocket door inspo here.

Showcase of elegance

With walnut timber cabinetry and that luxe waterfall island, this bar set up is the epitome of elegance. The mirrored wall makes the space look much large and would be the perfect place to perch while your other half cooked up a delicious meal in the adjacent kitchen.

Hey, we can dream, right?!

Room for all

It’s the dream. Well, our dream at least… to have not just a wine rack. Not just a wine cabinet… but a wine room. And if it looks anything like these beauties, we’d never want to leave home!

We love the black framed glass doors they all have, allowing the wine to do all the talking and be a real feature. We’d even go as far as calling it drinkable art 😉 !

Adults retreat

Consider this the adult equivalent of a kids playroom. We’re getting nothing but adults-only vibes from this space with luxe inclusions and finishes.

And again, we know there’s not wine storage shown here, but we’re just imagining those American walnut timber cabinets being filled to the brim with our fave bottles.

Living the dream

Talk about a living room feature wall! This family’s eclectic living room set up makes a serious feature of their wine collection. And we kinda love how they haven’t tried to fill it to the brim and make it picture perfect.

Hidden gem

Tucked away at the end of this epic kitchen island bench is a sweet but sensible wine storage space. While some people integrate a mini storage shelf or cabinets into the front of their kitchen island, we love how Sarah Yarrow Interiors integrated a compact wine rack instead.

Charcuterie ready

A built-in wine fridge is already a dream and a half for most of us. Add in a dedicated dry-aged meat fridge and you’ll have to excuse us while we pick our jaws up from the floor.

Guy and Jules Sebastian certainly know how to create an OTT cool kitchen, and you can take the full room tour here.

Hostess with the mostest

Bar set ups don’t get much better than this one. Ample storage for wine, shelves for cocktail essentials and recipe books to help you whip up something amazing…

And the black panelling on the cabinetry looks amazing, tying in beautifully to the contrasting white kitchen.

Winery vibes

This set up from Darren and Dee on a previous season of The Block is giving us all the at-home winery vibes. We can just picture ourselves hosting wine and cheese pairings here of a Saturday evening!

Perfectly positioned

This wine room is in the absolute perfect position. Right there, front and centre in the living, kitchen and dining space. It makes for a real stand out design feature in this open plan area.

Chic and sleek

Adding a bar and wine storage area in their ample walk-in pantry was the ideal choice when it came to building this home owner’s perfect kitchen.

The elegant black cabinetry and divine marble bench and splashback make for an elegant and timeless design.

Marble elegance

Karolina knew just what to do with the old-school, unused second kitchen when it came to reno-ing their forever home. And this is what she came up with! The marble herringbone tiled splashback has our heart. And we think it’s such a great idea to add a sink to your bar and wine area if you can.

You can see the before and afters for the whole home here.

Black hardwood floors

When it comes to timber flooring, black hardwood floors might not immediately spring to mind. But it’s a fab way to dial up the drama of a space.

Black wood floors work with a variety of colour palettes and interior styles, so don’t be afraid to embrace them. Paired with bright white walls, it’s sleek and sophisticated. Added to a dark interior and it’s cosy yet moody.

Something to keep in mind is they are prone to scuffs and scratches so perhaps not the best choice for households with pets and kids. However, if your heart is set on black wood flooring, you can add special finishes to make them more durable. For those seeking a more budget-friendly and low-maintenance option, laminate flooring offers a durable and stylish alternative that mimics the look of real wood or stone.

Gloss

Black glossy timber floors are divine. They’re so versatile, as we can see in this modern heritage Victorian entrance; a chilled and pared back boho bedroom; or mis-matched eclectic space.

Rustic

You can also embrace the imperfections of natural timber and opt for a rustic black timber floor. They work just as well in a vintage kitchen and dining room, or in an elegant art deco bedroom suite.

Herringbone or chevron

We know we’re not supposed to play favourites, but black timber floors laid in a herringbone or chevron pattern gives us major heart eyes. They’re the epitome of sophistication.

They work in a range of home styles such as the mudroom entrance in this beautiful contemporary farmhouse. Or, as a modern feature in this traditional but next level stylish home.

Sleek

If you have a modern home, or perhaps you’re designing a Hampton’s style home, black flooring can definitely work for you. Black wood floors laid in a simple pattern or with the boards set close together can give the room a sleek, streamlined look.

Black polished concrete floors

Another option for modern black floors is black concrete. Concrete floors make a serious statement, are durable, easy to clean and just downright gorgeous. They’re also often a more cost-effective choice and have a long life-span.

Simple and sophisticated

An industrial style home like the one pictured just screams out for black polished concrete floors, don’t you think?! And yet, they also work perfectly in a Scandi interior or even in the quirky colour-pop bedroom seen below.

Texture or detail

To add another element of wow to your polished concrete black floors, take a look at these for inspo. A feather finish or the addition of speckled aggregate are great if you want to add some subtle detail to your concrete floors. Not only do they look fab, they help to hide mess which is always a bonus!

Black tile floors

For a more durable black floor option, tiles are the perfect choice. While people often think of tiles for bathrooms, they can be used in every zone of the home.

There’s no such thing as just a black tile… keep scrolling to see some of the options available in terms of size, shapes, patterns and materials. Black floor tiles range from timber-look tiles to ones that mimic polished concrete, as well as black terrazzo floor tiles, and even natural stone. We’re betting you’ll want to take a trip to your local tile store, stat!

Herringbone

Laying your black tiles in a herringbone pattern adds another layer of interest and texture to your floors. It’s generally more pricey to lay tiles in a herringbone pattern but wouldn’t you agree it’s totally worth it?!

Natural stone tiles

Keeping the herringbone theme going, you can take things up a notch by investing in natural stone tiles. Take a look at how beautiful those black marble tiles and bluestone tiles look in the spaces below. Swoon!

You can find natural stone tiles in all sorts of shapes and sizes though, including penny round, hexagon, square, fish scale, Kitkat and more.

Black hexagon tiles

Another pattern of tile that can elevate your space is the classic hexagon. Big or small, hexagon floor tiles will never go out of style! It’s a way of making a bold impact with colour and pattern.

These pics show just how important grout choice is when tiling. Create a moody vibe by using a dark grout or emphasise the shape with a light grout.

Stretcher brick bond

The splashback and coloured cabinetry are the true stars of this laundry and mudroom, however it’s the floor tiles that really finish it off.

A simple black tile laid in a stretcher brick bond gives this space more drama than if a light, neutral tile had been used.

The same pattern in a black concrete-look tile has been used in this Hamptons style mudroom and laundry. The timber accents add warmth to the space and prevent it feeling too stark.

Heritage tile flooring

Talk about a statement! This heritage pattern floor tile entry, with its gorgeous stained glass door, allows the floors to be the star of the show. These heritage tiled floors are bold, but we totally dig it.

You can also find plenty of inspiration images on Pinterest using encaustic tiles which as slightly larger and generally easier to source. Just be aware cement tiles require more maintenance than porcelain. Gina shares tips to caring for encaustic tiles here.

Large format tiles

Tiles aren’t just for wet areas of the home. They also work well in the kitchen and main living areas. Bigger rooms can handle large format tiles, making rooms feel larger and more luxe.

Be sure to add some lighter elements through furniture or wall and cabinetry colour if you want to avoid it feeling too dark.

Black carpet

Ahh the old classic flooring option… carpet. Except we’re talking black carpet which isn’t commonly seen. We don’t really know why because as you’ll see from these pics — it totally works!. Choices Flooring has a range of carpet options for you to choose from, including a range of black carpets.

Sure, it’s a little less forgiving than a standard grey carpet, but it looks so plush adds a depth of elegance to the room. So why not do black carpet for home, we say!
