If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen these DIY Halloween pumpkin lanterns 🎃 This latest Kmart hack Halloween project ticks all the right boxes — simple, affordable and stylish! Using Kmart’s budget-friendly plastic pumpkins, a couple of cans of spray paint, and some puck lights, you can create glowing lanterns that look luxe but cost next to nothing.

Whether you line them up along your footpath or style them in your entryway, they’ll instantly set the spooky season mood. Watch my video below to see how I transformed these pumpkins step-by-step or keep scrolling for all the materials and instructions.

Materials you’ll need:

  • Plastic Halloween pumpkins (I used the Kmart ones)
  • Puck lights (battery-operated)
  • Black spray paint
  • Silver spray paint
  • Small paint brush

Steps:

1. Spray paint the pumpkins black

Start by giving your plastic pumpkins an even coat of black spray paint. I did two light coats to make sure the colour was deep and even. This creates that luxe matte base that instantly takes the pumpkins from cheap plastic to chic and spooky.

2. Add silver accents

Once the black paint is completely dry, it’s time to bring out the details. Using your silver spray paint, lightly mist accents onto the pumpkin — I focused on the inner eyes and along the natural indents.

This gives your pumpkins more depth and dimension, and the metallic gleam catches the light when they’re illuminated. You can also use a small paint brush to add a little more definition or highlight certain areas for a more dramatic effect.

3. Add the lights and style

Pop a puck light inside each pumpkin, and voilà — instant lanterns! These look incredible lining your footpath to welcome trick-or-treaters or clustered by your front door for a more modern Halloween display.

If you’re entertaining, you could even style them inside by your entryway or on a console table for ambient lighting that brings the spooky vibes.

I love how these turned out — they’re the perfect balance of moody and minimal. This Kmart hack Halloween idea proves you don’t need to spend much (or go over the top) to make your home feel festive. Plus, since the pumpkins are plastic, you can reuse them year after year.

Party planning on a budget: ideas, tips and inspo

Party platters, grazing tables and grazing boards

Feeding a crowd can be a bit of a headache… which is where grazing boards are an absolute lifesaver. Lots of options to suit all dietary restrictions, great for a big group, no need to slave away in the kitchen for hours. Plus they look great!

Using a few raised serving boards, chalkboard signs and jars from Kmart and laying out a jute table runner was the key to success for this stunning engagement party set up by Nikita. Laying it directly on the table means less fuss and clean up — no need for all the individual plates, platters and bowls — and gives you ample space to spread out your feast.

You can find our resident experts top tips on how to style the most gorgeous grazing board right here.

Personalised picnic

Posh picnics are a bit of a thing at the moment and we totally get why. While professionally organised picnics can be a bit pricey, you can totally create your own fancy DIY picnic — perfect for a girls catch up, a baby shower, birthday party, anniversary… any occasion really! Check out all our tips on how to put together the perfect picnic.

A picnic basket is a must, and we love how Kate personalised the insulted rattan picnic basket from Kmart. This would make a stunning gift too!

Backyard wedding on a budget

This small but sweet backyard wedding set up is elegance pared back. We all know weddings can cost a fortune so we love this idea for a sweet and personalised at-home wedding. But if you are looking to have your special day elsewhere, you could explore a wedding venue in Sydney that offers affordable packages while still creating a magical atmosphere. Otherwise, you can elevate your at-home wedding with personalised alcohol boxes from The Neighbours Cellar. Their premium wines and spirits with custom labels will impress guests and double as a memorable keepsake from the special occasion.

This backyard styling concept would work just as well for a birthday, hen’s party, engagement, or just-because party. Hiring large furniture items is a great idea so you don’t fork out for pieces you won’t use after the event. Then adding in small decor details from places like The Reject Shop, Big W, Kmart, Target and craft stores will ensure you and your guests have a beautiful party… on a budget! Our top tip, embrace soft lighting through candles and fairy lights for that magical ambience!

Other ways you can save on your wedding costs without compromising on the celebration is to rent attire, consider DIY catering, and leveraging technology by creating a wedding website instead of traditional paper invitations.

Foraging is your friend

By using glassware, vases or old jars you already have around the home, why not turn these into centrepieces with gorgeous foraged displays for your next party?

From greenery in the backyard to twigs and branches you pick up on a walk around your local area, foraged beauties can be a great and cost effective (aka free!) way to style on a budget.

Foraged eucalyptus and gum nut centrepiece
Gina used foraged eucalyptus leaves, some artificial gum nut stems, Christmas ornaments and fairy lights to create this centrepiece on a budget | See more of this outdoor Christmas table styling here

Stylish on a budget

When planning a party on a budget, not everything has to be pricey. We love the idea of mixing a few luxe pieces with more affordable options like glass bottles as vases and faux flowers, foraged greenery, fronds or feathers for decor.

This beyond gorgeous engagement party looks top-level lush, but the cake stand is from Kmart and has been filled with cheap and cheerful florals to give it that rustic boho look.

Keep your party stylish but on budget! And who would know that half the decor from this party was from our fave high street bargain store?! Not us, that’s for sure!

Remember for important celebrations, it’s better to splurge on the items that will be with you forever and save on smaller details. For example, for a wedding party we suggest spending more only on items that will be with you forever such as men’s wedding bands, quality photography and videography to treasure the memories.

DIY invites

Printed invitations are lovely, but for many occasions, parties and events, you can usually get away with an electronic invite. Not a whizz on photoshop? No matter! FREE programs like Canva make it effortless.

There are hundreds of amazing designs to choose from for every type of party. Many of them are free and you can personalise and customise them with ease. If you’re organising a group event, consider using services like Group Together to easily collect contributions for group gifts or special expenses — making party planning even simpler.

Pretty in pink

Call it Barbie fever but who doesn’t love a pink party?! Perfect for a hens brunch or romantic Valentine’s celebration, a pink theme is always a good idea. Fact.

Have fun with pink tableware and accessories to emulate a specific style. For example boho luxe, modern, or for a kids party perhaps fairies. We adore this fabulous pink set up Kristine created… and yep, everything pictured is from Kmart!

You don’t have to use a pink theme though. Select any colour from the spectrum and base your party decor around that colour scheme.

Twinkle on the cheap

If in doubt, just add fairy lights! Using a hula-hoop, some spray paint, and twinkly fairy lights, you can make these gorgeous hanging light features for next to nothing. We love how they look at night and take this outdoor wedding to the next level.

Spooktacular fun

Of course one of the biggest nights of the year for a party is Halloween! From DIY decorations like paper cut out bats to DIY costumes, there are plenty of ways you can create a spooky yet stylish event on a budget. Get all our Halloween tips and tricks.

Shop your home

Boho picnic parties are still trending and it’s not hard to see why. We adore this sweet but simple (and stylish) set up for this cute kids party.

Our fave part is that it’s pared back (this is party planning on a budget after all!) and it’s not all perfectly matchy-matchy. The cushions (Kmart, we suspect) don’t all match. And while these may have been purchased new, it gave us the idea that for any party, you could (and should) shop your home before you rush to the shops to spend up big.

Use cushions you already have. The strips of hanging paper look fab and could be scraps of paper or fabric you have in the kids craft box. Keep it simple, we guarantee whoever the birthday girl (or boy) is, they will love the effort you’ve gone to. And you will love saving money while you’re at it!

Sweet and simple birthday set up

DIY cake stand or food platter

Elevate your table styling by literally elevating some of your foods. Using platters at different heights instantly creates a more luxe look and you can easily DIY your own.

This one from Dina is super simple and uses a Kmart bowl, plate and super glue. Yep, that’s it. It looks great and adds height and interest to her Christmas tablescape. You can check out exactly how she did it on her Instagram page.

Floral centrepieces without the hefty price tag

Using faux flowers, a round rattan tray and twinkly fairy lights, Peta created this focal centrepiece using all products from Kmart. This would be perfect for a party or even as wedding table centrepieces.

Pamper your pet

Why should humans have all fun?! This is a cute party planning on a budget for your furry (or feathered!) friend. They honestly don’t need much to keep them happy. Mostly food and attention will do! But we love the raised platter (Kmart!) full of puppy treats and the sparkly backdrop (try Kmart, Big W, Spotlight) for that perfect pooch pic.

DIY floral centrepiece or wedding bouquet

The secret to creating a great floral arrangement for less is having good inspo, like this stunning bouquet from Three Birds Renovations. Then hit up stores like Kmart and Big W for artificial flowers and mix in a few real foraged stems. Presto, a stunning floral centrepiece or wedding bouquet!

Unicorn magic

From the bowls and plates to platters and backdrop, this magical unicorn kids party set up was done on a budget. Using much of what she already had at home and adding extra bits in from the affordable range at Kmart, Bec made a unicorn garden party that her daughter is sure to remember forever.

When party planning on a budget, shop your home first. Guests won’t mind (or even notice) if things don’t match perfectly. Use what you already have, borrow from friends and family, and check out thrift store to snatch up a few bargains.

Teepee boho party

Long tables are ideal for celebrations, creating a sense of togetherness and looking fabulous! Plus, when you can simply use a few timber palettes or large timber board as a table, it can be a cost effective way to host your guests.

Marian created this teddy bear picnic for her little one using items purchased from Kmart. What we love about this setup is that the teepee can double as a present for the birthday girl once the party is over. Smart, stylish and savvy.

Pamper party

Ok, so we know this is meant to be a kids party, but… can we come?! How much fun does this budget friendly party look?!

A stunning pamper party set up for her little girl’s 8th birthday, this looks like the party of dreams! We love the stunning centrepiece and pieces of fabric draped romantically across the table. The little pamper party bags (Kmart, of course!) are the best!

DIY photo booth fun

Capture the memories of the day with a fun photo booth. Sure, you could hire one, but we’re talking party planning on a budget here! So why not steal this great idea, using a ring light and a phone (or tablet) with some cute Kmart costume props to make it a real party!

You may have seen on Instagram that I recently posted a reel of a picnic I set up. The rug in that video is actually a regular indoor throw blanket that I hacked into a picnic blanket. Crazy, right?! For under $20, I’m going to show you how you can transform any rug or blanket in your home into a waterproof picnic rug in minutes. This is an easy hack that even a novice DIYer can do so keep on scrolling for all the steps!

Related item: How to pack the perfect picnic: Create a luxe picnic (bonus free checklist!)
Related item: Spring garden party meets wilderness table setting

Items you will need:

  • a throw rug of your choice
  • sheet of PVC at the length of your rug (this is sold by the metre from Lincraft, costing approximately $7 per metre)
  • press stud kit (also available at Lincraft. I opted for a bronze finish)
  • hammer
  • scissors
Items you will need to make picnic rug
Items you will need to make your own waterproof picnic rug

Steps:

Step 1: Lay out your plastic and cut to size

Firstly, you’ll create the plastic backing for your throw blanket. This is what will make it waterproof.

The easiest way to cut the plastic sheet to size is to find a large, clean floor area where you can lay out your plastic material. This product is sold by the metre at Lincraft and is available in a thick or thin version. I bought 2 metres of the thin plastic as it is still durable while also being easy to fold/roll (and you’ll see why this is important soon).

Next, place your throw blanket on top. Line up the corners on one end and cut a straight line where the throw blanket ends to remove excess plastic. To save time on measuring, I simply placed the throw blanket on top and folded the plastic at this point to create a guide of where to cut — it doesn’t have to be perfect but if you want perfect, you could also grab a measuring tape and texta 😉

Lay out plastic and cut to size
Find a large, clean floor area to lay out your plastic sheet
Cut plastic to size
Where the throw blanket ends, cut a straight line to create your plastic backing

Step 2: Hammer press studs in all corners of the throw and plastic

The next step is to add press studs. These are stud pop buttons like those often found in clothing. I opted for bronze press studs as I liked the muted metallic finish.

By fastening the plastic to your throw using press studs, you’ll be able to easily remove the throw blanket from the plastic when you need to pop the blanket in the wash.

Read the instructions on the kit and layout all the parts to make life easier for yourself.

Then use your hammer to add press studs to all 4 corners of your throw blanket and plastic backing.

Each corner of your picnic blanket will use 4 pieces. You’ll attach 2 pieces to the top layer (the throw blanket) and 2 pieces to the bottom layer (the plastic backing). I used the prettier bronze buttons for the top layer (parts A and B) and the inner part of the stud (parts C and D) on the plastic backing. This step will make more sense when it comes time to adding press studs, just follow the packet instructions.

Depending on the size of your blanket, you may also like to add extra press studs along the length. I did this on the two longer sides.

Working out press stud pieces
Open your press stud kit and work out what parts are what
Add press studs to all corners
Hammer press studs to all 4 corners of your picnic blanket
Clip rug and plastic together
You will end up with a pretty stud button on the top of your throw that can fasten to the stud on the plastic backing

Step 3: Clip it together and roll it up

Your waterproof picnic rug is done! All you need to do is clip the plastic backing to the throw and roll it up. Now it’s ready to take on your next picnic!

This hack to make a waterproof picnic rug was inspired by wanting a soft and comfortable picnic rug that’s large enough for the family to sit on. And that didn’t cost the world. Or look hideous.

You could use the technique in this tutorial to turn any throw blanket you have at home into a waterproof picnic rug for about $20. The plastic backing is $7 per metre and press studs cost about $9 per packet.

Roll it up for your next picnic

Grazing tables are still having their moment in the spotlight. They seem to be at every party these days, and we can totally see why! They look absolutely amazing, are full of delicious foods and just look so inviting! We caught up with the ever so gorgeous Ella from Styled by Ella Garland on her top tips on how to create a gorgeous grazing board.

How to start your grazing board

“Grazing boards are perfect for parties and events as they are a great way to make sure no one goes hungry! Plus they look really impressive and most importantly… are totally insta-worthy!” laughs Ella.

Choose a colour scheme…

“When planning a board, my first tip is to choose a colour scheme. Generally I go for 2 to 3 colours to match the event.

“I love to incorporate these colours throughout the boards and platters and also select sweets, flowers and decorations to match.”

Line your table…

“Next, line your table with wrapping paper (to match the colour theme), brown paper, a table cloth or baking paper. This means you can arrange delicious fruit, nuts and crackers to spill off the boards and onto the table,” says Ella.

Start arranging…

“From there, I arrange the boards and platters so they are grouped into little clusters along the table.”

For maximum impact I also use wooden boxes or wire stands to elevate some of the boards.

“I love layering textures, such as using a white planter pot topped with a terrazzo tile slab. It creates an elegant, elevated tray where you can add more decorative pieces.

“My favourites include whole seasonal fruits, vases and little piles or jars of crackers.”

Add some greenery or florals…

“Just before you add the food, it’s a great idea to bring in some greenery.

“A vase of nice flowers or foliage is a great centrepiece. My hot tip is always place it slightly off centre!

“Then add some loose foliage or tropical leaves in amongst the delicious food,” she says.

Now the food…

“When it’s time to lay out the food, start with things like dips that are in bowls then move on to larger items like bread and cheese and then go on from there. I leave crackers, nuts and other small foods until last as they can fill in all the gaps.”

The best foods to include on your grazing board

“My number one food for how to create a gorgeous grazing board just HAS to be cheese!

Cheese, cold meats, dips, quince paste, olives, fruit, crackers, nuts, dried fruit and bread are my main fave grazing board foods.

“I also love to add some sweet items like wafer biscuits, shortbread or doughnuts — the possibilities are deliciously endless! Fruit mince pies, gingerbread or shortbread are the perfect sweet additions for a Christmas-theme grazing board.

“Bread is great for decoration purposes too. It’s wonderful for height and filling up the back side of the board,” Ella explains.

How to create a gorgeous Christmas grazing board

Ella was run off her feet creating delicious Christmas grazing boards for clients so if you’re considering one this year, we’ve asked her for her top tips!

Go for festive foods

“Christmas is my absolute FAVOURITE time of year,” says Ella excitedly.

“To create a yummy Christmas grazing board, buy a selection of delicious and festive foods. Think dried cranberries, pistachios, gingerbread and cherries to add as finishing touches to give your grazing board that wonderful Christmassy feel.

For our December wedding, we created a beautiful white-theme grazing table. It was incredible! It truly was the grazing table of my dreams!

“One of my other favourite boards was one I created for my brother’s engagement party. It included a huge leg of ham, bread rolls and lots of nice accompaniments. This would be another perfect idea for a Christmas grazing table.

Go for groups of 3

“When you’re setting up or planning the table or grazing board, stand back and make sure the layout is balanced.

“I always use the design principal of grouping things in threes — grouping a big platter, a medium board and then a bowl or small plate. If you’re doing a big table you might have a few of those groupings,” says Ella.

No need to go OTT

“Don’t feel overwhelmed thinking you need to have tonnes of food to fill a large table. When you’re laying out the table, you can fill sections with foliage, flowers and bread.

“Pinch some decorations off your tree and add a cluster of pretty baubles or a stack of Christmas crackers amongst the food.”

Go crazy for crackers

“It sounds simple, but don’t underestimate the humble little cracker. They are probably the most inexpensive item on the table and come in lots of different shapes and sizes.

“I like to buy lots of different shapes and types of crackers to create interest for the eye,” explains Ella.

Prep ahead of time

“Working with food, you can’t lay it all out until just before your guests arrive. You also don’t want to be a stressed, sweaty mess when they knock on the door so do as much as you can beforehand.

“I roll all of my cold meats and store them in airtight containers in the fridge. As well as washing and cutting all the fruit and veggie sticks and pop all the dips into nice bowls,” explains Ella.

The best advice of all

“Just remember to have fun with it! You can add your own personality to your board by incorporating your favourite foods or treats.

“One grazing table I did for an 18th birthday party worked out so well because I just had fun doing it. It was set up on the corner of a stunning marble kitchen bench and I went crazy with the pink accents!”

For our most recent project, we were inspired by summer entertaining and our love of cheese, and created this simple DIY Nordic house cheeseboard.

Steps:

1. Measure 15cm from the top of the board on the left and right side and draw a line from the centre top of the board to those points, creating the roofline of your house cheese board.

Mark cut lines

2. Use a saw to cut along your roofline.

3. Create a border of masking tape around the house-shaped board to leave an exposed timber border.

Cover edges of house cheeseboard with tape

4. Paint the face with blackboard paint and allow to dry well. Depending on your finish, you may need to paint a second coat.

5. Once dry, wash well and then place your favourite cheeses on top. You can use a chalk texta to write the names of the cheeses like we did.

Splatter wrapping paper can be so hard to get your hands on (and cost a fortune!) but you can actually make it yourself in just minutes.

We stuck to our fave colour combo this Christmas — black and white — but you could get creative and try bright colours on kraft paper or opt for a more traditional pairing like gold paint on white paper.

Prepare to get messy and make this fun wrapping paper that hardly needs a DIY tutorial!

Items you will need:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Paint (regular acrylic paint)
  • Paint brush or stick to flick paint
  • Newspaper or drop sheet to protect flooring
  • Twine, ribbon or gift tags to finish the look

Steps:

1. There are two techniques you could use — splattering the paper before you wrap your gifts (quicker as you can cover a large area at once) or wrapping your gifts first and then taking these outside to be splattered (the benefit of this approach is only creating as much wrapping paper as you need and knowing you won’t run short).

Note: the second approach means you need to wait for the paint to dry on the topside before you can turn it over.

2. Whichever wrapping approach you use, to splatter the wrapping paper simply dunk your paint brush or stick into a pot of paint to load it up with excess paint. Then begin flicking the brush across the paper to create splatter marks. We used black paint against the white paper and white paint against the black paper.

3. Once dry, finish the look with twine, ribbon, gift tags or other decorative elements.

Tissue tassel garlands are a huge party décor trend! They’re fluffy and fun, inexpensive and easy to make, and fill a lot of visual space making them perfect for backdrops at parties — think above a dessert bar or behind a photo booth.

Don’t spend a fortune buying these online when you can make them yourself at home. Many online tutorials use wire to secure the tassel but our kid-friendly version doesn’t have any sharp edges.

We like garlands that use at least 3-4 colours — especially those that mix gold or metallic paper. Keep scrolling for our simple steps on how to make a tassel garland.
