Hear us out for a minute… This DIY is surprisingly chic and we challenge you to find a cheaper Easter DIY idea out there!

With just a balloon, a few sheets of toilet paper and a water spray bottle, you can make these adorable Easter egg vases. Fill them with bulb plants as Jaruška did, place Easter decor inside, or get creative and find a different use for them.

5. Easter egg candles

Simple and oh-so-chic, we adore these minimalist Easter egg candles. Egg and bunny silicone moulds are readily available online and generally cost under $10. Make a few in different tones by adding wax dye to suit your home’s aesthetic and style them in a vignette. They are a fab decor item in their own right and add ambient, moody lighting when burning.

Alternatively, you could wash some real eggshells and make candles directly in the shells. It’s a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative.

6. Hack an Easter table lamp

Transform a simple tall glass vase into a sweet Easter table lamp with this creative DIY project! Fill the vase with faux moss, a decorative bunny, and artificial flowers to create a festive spring scene. Then, turn it into a lamp by adding a puck light and a lampshade. Perfect for adding warmth and whimsy to your seasonal decor.

7. Giant fabric decoupage Easter eggs (Polly Pocket vibes)

If you’re looking for something sweet to gift your children this Easter that isn’t chocolate, take a look at this adorable giant Easter egg idea. Using an oversized plastic egg, Gen spray painted it white, covered it with strips of fabric and finished with mod podge.

The best part of this Easter craft project is that she added a hinge to the back so the egg opens like a Polly Pocket. Inside she create a padded bed using the same fabric and filled it with a bunny toy and homemade book.

8. Speckled Easter bath bombs

A project that’s great fun with the kids and you’ll actually want to use are homemade bath bombs. You only need a few ingredients (that may already be in your cupboard) and to follow a simple bath bomb recipe.

Make them festive by picking up an egg-shaped mould and presto, Easter egg bath bombs. Use whatever essential oils you like for fragrance and get creative with colours or decorative accents — great as gifts or self-care treats.

9. Easter pillar candles

Another type of Easter candle you can make is to transform regular white pillar candles into charming Easter scenes using a napkin, piece of wax paper and iron. Yes, you read that correctly!

10. Fragrant farmhouse-style fabric carrots

If you love the farmhouse aesthetic, these fabric home fragrance carrots will be for you! Best of all, you won’t need a sewing machine. Just cut a triangle of your preferred fabric, like hessian, fill with dried herbs or flowers, and finish with a sprig of rosemary. These would look sweet on an Easter table or styled in a vignette.

11. DIY bunny door mat

Easter DIYs don’t get much simpler than this! A plain door mat, printed image and a can of spray paint is all you’ll need to give your entry a festive feel.

12. Make your own Easter egg clay ornaments

Another idea for your branch Easter tree is to hang clay ornaments. You can make your own clay at home using ingredients from your pantry, and then paint and decorate them however you like. Martha Stewart used bright and pretty pastel paints, while Kim Wallace Ceramics takes a more muted and minimalist approach.

Illuminate ceramic houses

One of our fave new season Kmart Christmas decor pieces are these Nordic inspired ceramic houses. And what makes them look even better? Illuminating them with magical fairy lights!

Such a simple idea that adds festive glow to your coffee table, sideboard, Christmas centrepiece or fireplace mantel. We love the idea of a row of these because when it comes to twinkly lights, more is definitely more!

Hack your own living wreath

We love this minimalist succulent wreath idea that Amanda Massey shared. She says she simply attached sphagnum moss with a fishing line to the Kmart wicker wreath and used a hot glue gun to secure the succulents in place.

And once Christmas is over, you can remove the succulents from the wreath and re-plant them. If you don’t trust yourself to use the real-deal, Kmart also has a range of faux succulents and plants you could try!

Twinkly floral Christmas wreath

Talk about a making a statement! Check out this beauty from Antoinette Favory, who created this stunning Kmart Christmas hacks wreath with faux flowers and twinkly fairy lights.

Using a Kmart wreath, she switched out some ornaments for faux flowers and tree picks, finishing the look with a string of LED fairy lights. The red berries and pine cones are so festive while the gum nuts and other artificial stems give it a contemporary feel.

Best of all, you can find all these items at Kmart!

DIY wreath bauble tassel

We’re not exactly sure what you’d call this Kmart hack but we’re going with DIY wreath bauble tassel. The clever and creative Ashlee made this embellishment that can be used to elevate any Christmas wreath. Simply use a selection of baubles in similar tones and various sizes, and use jute twine to hang them together. She shares all the steps over on her YouTube channel.

OTT Christmas tree styling

With wreath inspiration covered, it’s time to step inside the home to the main event — the Christmas tree. Decorating your Christmas tree can quickly add up to a small fortune, so here are some savvy Kmart Christmas tree decorating ideas to achieve that wow look for less.

Firstly, we just adore this elegant white and gold Christmas tree by Alicia. She’s used a wicker tree collar, that sweet train track and several tree picks from Kmart.

Painted wrapping paper tablecloth

Using white paper and red paint from Kmart, Chloe created this joyous Christmas tablecloth for just a few dollars! Wrapping paper as a tablecloth is a fab, inexpensive hack on its own but adding a hand-painted Christmas scene totally elevates it to the next level. Thoughtful, personalised and definitely budget-friendly!

Traditional Christmas tree decor

So much of the Christmas tree decor below is from… you bet, Kmart! Leonie has gone with a traditional Christmas theme featuring nutcrackers, deer, snowflakes and angels. We also picked this image because all those wrapped Christmas gifts really add to the festive feeling, don’t you agree? Perhaps it will serve as motivation to get your Christmas shopping done early so you can admire your beautiful Christmas gift wrapping 😉

Scented Christmas decoration idea

It’s no secret we’re obsessed with essential oils. We use them a lot in the home — for cleaning and diffusing — and at Christmas time, the right scent can immediately evoke feelings of festive cheer.

Here’s a clever Christmas tree hack using a Kmart terracotta light up decoration that’s been infused with a Christmas tree scent! For all of us who have an artificial Christmas tree but wished it was the real deal, why not save this idea to your Pinterest board?!

Bow-tiful Christmas gift idea

Ok so this Kmart Christmas hack isn’t about decorating your home… rather a thoughtful and affordable Christmas gift idea that can add style to someone else’s home.

For those of us a little more crafty, here’s a sweet and stylish Christmas decoration you can make from scratch! Using wooden beads and hemp cord from Kmart, Soph made these modern rainbow tree ornaments.

Christmas tree napkins

After the Christmas tree, we argue the next most important Christmas styling in the home is your Christmas table. So let’s take a look at some easy and affordable ways to elevate your Christmas table setting using Kmart hacks and styling tricks.

First up, we just had to share this totally stylish and on-trend tablescape that features everything Kmart. Our favourite part of the look has got to be those adorable Christmas tree napkins! Trusty Martha Stewart has a video tutorial on her site showing how you can fold your own napkins into Christmas trees.

‘That’ pool noodle craze

Last year we just couldn’t get away from all the creative Christmas table centrepieces made from pool noodles! Look, there were some not-so-great ones out there we must admit, but some were seriously cool and it IS a great way to decorate on a budget. Here’s how it’s done:

  • grab yourself a pool noodle, Christmas ornaments in your chosen colour scheme, and some greenery, to decorate
  • take a hot glue gun and cover the noodle in as much greenery as possible. If your budget allows, you can just use ornaments like the gorgeous one pictured below.
  • get creative and add your Christmas ornaments, gluing them as you go, to create an OTT table centrepiece for less.

Unique and fun to do!

Classic Christmas table styling

If you prefer classic Christmas styling, take a look at this simple nature-inspired table by Caroline. Using pillar candles wrapped in twine, a few faux stems and some Kmart timber decor, it’s an effortless look you can use again and again. And best of all, even the most beginner DIYers among us can pull off this look!

Keep your Christmas table decor in place with this idea

One clever Mum came up with an idea for keeping your beautiful and carefully curated Christmas table centrepiece in tact during your Christmas feast!

Using the Kmart extendable pantry shelves, she suggests simply popping them over the top and voilà! Now you can place all your delicious Christmas goodies safely above your decor.

Moveable Christmas centrepiece

Alternatively, we love this idea of making your centrepiece in a box so you can easily move it to the side when it’s time to bring out the food.

Using a Kmart bamboo storage box, some candles and foraged foliage, it’s one of the cheapest but still stylish Christmas table decorating ideas we’ve seen.

Minimalist Christmas vignette

There are endless ways you can sprinkle festive decorating around your home so we couldn’t finish this round up of Kmart Christmas hacks without sharing a couple of vignette or sideboard styling ideas.

Jem is one of our fave Instagrammers and she styled her sideboard using affordable finds from Kmart, including that glass cloche and apothecary jars. It’s a restrained take on Christmas styling and we’re totally here for it!

1. Tie the perfect velvet bow (the hack that makes your tree look instantly luxe)

Velvet bows are everywhere this season and for good reason. They add softness, texture and that understated sense of luxury that suits both traditional and contemporary styling. But tying your own can prove a little trickier than you’d think… until now.

Chantel shares a clever hack to tie the perfect velvet bow so it sits full, symmetrical and perfectly on your tree every time. Use them as tree decorations, on garlands, wreaths or even as finishing touches on gifts. It’s the easiest way to make your tree look professionally styled.

2. Hanging wreath hack (the IKEA hack everyone is trying)

If you love a minimalist yet striking wreath, this IKEA hack is for you. Using a simple hoop, faux eucalyptus foliage and fairy lights, you can create a sculptural, floating wreath moment that instantly elevates your entryway, dining space or living room.

If it’s available to you, you swap out the artificial stems for fresh eucalyptus or pine cuttings. You could also add other decorative elements like the ribbon hack above or a mix of ornaments. However you put your own spin on it, the result is airy, modern and seriously high-impact.

3. Clay + dried orange slice name tags

Are these not the most beautiful name tags you’ve ever seen?! There’s something magical about handmade Christmas touches, and this combo of air-dry claydried orange slices, and natural twine feels fresh yet nostalgic.

These name tags are perfect for place settings, gift tags or as hanging tree decorations.

If this decorating idea is your Christmas vibe, check out all the ways you can decorate with dried orange slices.

Prefer something easier?

If this feels like too much effort, our napkin folding hacks — either the napkin bow or napkin Christmas tree — can elevate your place settings in seconds. No crafting, no mess, just instant wow-factor.

4. Bauble + coat hanger wreath hack

Over the years we’ve shared plenty of DIY Christmas wreath ideas and here’s the latest one we discovered! Using a simple metal wire coat hanger, cut it open and shape it into a circle. Then thread your baubles through and twist it back together to close. It’s perfect for your front door or hanging above a console table.

The secret to making it look luxe?

  • stick to a defined colour palette
  • mix matte, gloss and textured finishes
  • add a velvet ribbon to finish.

5. Damage-free garland hanging using a curtain tension rod

If you love a garland moment but don’t want to damage your walls, you’ll want to try this renter-friendly hack.

Use a curtain tension rod between two walls or inside your doorway, then drape your garland over the top. Add ribbon, fairy lights or bells to dial up the festive vibes.

6. Create a magical Christmas village (this year’s cosiest trend)

Christmas villages have made a huge comeback this year — but with a modern twist. Instead of cluttered shelves, think curated, minimalist collections styled on:

  • console tables
  • bookshelvesa
  • sideboards
  • dining table centrepiece
  • window ledges.

Use ceramic or white wooden houses, fairy lights and bottle brush trees to create a soft, glowing festive scene.

7. Viral ‘gingerbread house’ window light hack

The latest festive home decorating trend that seems to be everywhere is to literally make your home look like a glowing gingerbread house!

Using a set of warm LED lights taped to the inside of your windows, you can create a classic gingerbread outline effect. From the street, the result is pure Christmas magic. Super low cost and impactful!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen these DIY Halloween pumpkin lanterns 🎃 This latest Kmart hack Halloween project ticks all the right boxes — simple, affordable and stylish! Using Kmart’s budget-friendly plastic pumpkins, a couple of cans of spray paint, and some puck lights, you can create glowing lanterns that look luxe but cost next to nothing.

Whether you line them up along your footpath or style them in your entryway, they’ll instantly set the spooky season mood. Watch my video below to see how I transformed these pumpkins step-by-step or keep scrolling for all the materials and instructions.

Related article: Hauntingly fun Halloween DIY decorations and crafts

Materials you’ll need:

  • Plastic Halloween pumpkins (I used the Kmart ones)
  • Puck lights (battery-operated)
  • Black spray paint
  • Silver spray paint
  • Small paint brush

Steps:

1. Spray paint the pumpkins black

Start by giving your plastic pumpkins an even coat of black spray paint. I did two light coats to make sure the colour was deep and even. This creates that luxe matte base that instantly takes the pumpkins from cheap plastic to chic and spooky.

2. Add silver accents

Once the black paint is completely dry, it’s time to bring out the details. Using your silver spray paint, lightly mist accents onto the pumpkin — I focused on the inner eyes and along the natural indents.

This gives your pumpkins more depth and dimension, and the metallic gleam catches the light when they’re illuminated. You can also use a small paint brush to add a little more definition or highlight certain areas for a more dramatic effect.

3. Add the lights and style

Pop a puck light inside each pumpkin, and voilà — instant lanterns! These look incredible lining your footpath to welcome trick-or-treaters or clustered by your front door for a more modern Halloween display.

If you’re entertaining, you could even style them inside by your entryway or on a console table for ambient lighting that brings the spooky vibes.

I love how these turned out — they’re the perfect balance of moody and minimal. This Kmart hack Halloween idea proves you don’t need to spend much (or go over the top) to make your home feel festive. Plus, since the pumpkins are plastic, you can reuse them year after year.

1. Turn old jars into luminaries

Christmas and magical lighting go hand in hand — and one of the easiest ways to bring that soft, festive glow into your home is with DIY luminaries. These charming lights create a warm ambience that’s perfect for your fireplace mantel, dining table, or entryway.

Take inspiration from store-bought designs or browse online tutorials to see just how simple it is to transform a humble glass jar into a stylish Christmas decoration. Add a coat of frosted paint, wrap with twine or lace, or decorate with cut-out stars and snowflakes.

Pop in a tealight or LED candle, and you’ll have beautiful handmade Christmas luminaries that make your home feel cosy and festive.

2. Paper sandwich bags become giant snowflakes

It doesn’t get much cheaper or simpler than this Christmas DIY idea! All you need are some brown paper sandwich bags, glue stick and scissors. Glue 8 bags together and cut out different shapes following the instructions in our tutorial.

These snowflakes look great clustered together, so make at least 5-8 and suspend them at different heights around your fireplace mantel.

Paper snowflakes are incredibly lightweight and can be suspended using a single removable hook, making this a renter-friendly and budget-friendly Christmas decorating idea.

3. Make gnomes out of socks

Gnomes are adorable and one of the most popular Christmas fireplace decorations, and these DIY sock gnomes couldn’t be easier to make! We love the idea of creating a whole family of them to line your mantel, mixing up the sizing and colours.

This no-sew Christmas craft uses simple materials — just one sock per gnome, a small piece of faux fur fabric, string, and a wooden bead (or any small round item) for the nose.

Follow the video tutorial below or experiment with your own technique. You may also like to check out our concrete gnome tutorial for a more minimalist look.

4. DIY artwork using old music sheets

The term ‘DIY artwork’ may make you cringe but we’re sure you’ll admit, this idea to frame a Christmas carol looks elegant. If you don’t have vintage music sheets at home, you can print your own from free online archives.

Another quick and affordable idea is to frame a beautiful piece of Christmas wrapping paper. Choose designs with hand-illustrated details to give your artwork an elevated look. It’s an effortless Christmas DIY that would look great on your fireplace mantel, entry table or hallway display.

5. Make your own wreath from oranges, succulents or anything!

Wreaths are a fab focal piece to style above your fireplace. If there’s one thing we learnt when pulling together our roundup of the best Christmas wreaths, it’s that you can make a festive wreath out of almost anything!

7. Make a natural garland

Similar to the wreath idea above, a natural Christmas garland is a stunning way to decorate your fireplace mantel. You can forage for greenery in your area (we like to call this civil pruning) and add festive touches like dried orange slices, pine cones, and cinnamon sticks.

This approach is sustainable, stylish, and virtually zero cost — not to mention it smells incredible! Layer in eucalyptus, olive branches, or whatever foliage grows locally for that effortless, organic look.

It’s one of our absolute favourite DIY Christmas fireplace decorations, bringing warmth and the smells of Christmas into your home.

Quick tips: Halloween home styling guide

We’re the first to admit this is a super long guide to Halloween home styling so if you want the abbreviated version, we’re summarising the best ideas!

  • start at the entryway: welcome guests with a seasonal doormat, lanterns or pumpkins
  • layer textures indoors: mix cosy throws, cushions and candles with pops of orange, black or moody purple
  • pick a theme: spooky chic, gothic glam, or playful pastel — sticking to one look keeps your styling cohesive
  • use lighting for atmosphere: fairy lights, LED candles and lanterns add instant mood (without the fire hazard)
  • sprinkle subtle accents: swap artwork, vases or table décor for Halloween-inspired pieces rather than going overboard
  • get crafty: DIY decorations like painted pumpkins, bat garlands or hand-cut silhouettes add personality (and save money)
  • don’t forget the outdoors: style your porch, balcony or garden with pumpkins, string lights or spooky silhouettes
  • think sustainable: reuse decorations each year, or opt for natural elements like branches, dried flowers and real pumpkins.

Where to start?

Before hitting the shops and picking up any Halloween home decor, we suggest thinking of a theme or colour scheme. Having a common element, such as colour accents or objects, running through your home will create a more elevated look (read: not tacky!). It’s also a great way to save money at Halloween as you’ll know the direction you want to take. This means you won’t buy things you don’t need and can DIY your own boo-gie on a budget Halloween decor.

Some classic Halloween themes and elements include:

  • skeletons
  • bats
  • witches and broom sticks
  • pumpkins
  • ghosts
  • zombies
  • graveyards
  • spiders and spiderwebs
  • black cats
  • crows.

But when it comes to modern Halloween home styling, almost anything goes! So don’t feel you have to stick to one of these traditional Halloween themes.

Painted pumpkins

Of course no Halloween styling would be complete without some pumpkins. This year we’re seeing a change in pumpkin decorating too! Instead of chancing a serious injury with pumpkin carving, many Instagrammers are choosing to paint and decorate them instead. A great idea for both indoor and outdoor pumpkin decor, we share two creative ideas below!

We have to commend Instagrammer @incrediblyorganized for this clever and simple festive decor idea. You can easily swap out the small pumpkins for other seasonal events like hearts for Valentine’s Day, or various Christmas decorations.

Spiderwebs

Spiderwebs are a Halloween classic, and we can’t deny how much we love them! This home example proves it doesn’t have to be perfect to be effective. Chuck a few pumpkins or broomsticks in there, and you have a winner.

Top Halloween themes and styling directions for 2025

Just like with regular home decorating, Halloween home styling goes through trends and these are the top themes trending this year. Call it our Halloween trend forecast if you will!

1. Organic, earthy and textured Halloween

These theme has been trending more broadly so it makes sense that it’s translated to spooky festive home decorating too. Instead of overly saturated orange and black, try leaning into natural materials and muted palettes. Think dried branches, bleached foliage, raw timber elements, linen, muted terracotta, charcoal, bone and olive.

  • use real pumpkins, dried seed pods and grasses, manipulated branches (spray-painted or left natural) to build layered texture
  • matte black, slate greys, clay tones and deep greens become your accent colours instead of neon or primary ones. For example, you could paint old wine bottles and place a pillar candle in each as a sustainable and trending table centrepiece
  • combine these natural textures with low-level lighting (warm LEDs) to stay moody without harsh contrast.

2. Vintage, nostalgic and storytelling Halloween

There’s a resurgence of vintage Halloween charm: old illustrations, antique motifs, retro signage, classic jack-o’-lantern faces, Victorian skeleton prints, and worn patina detail.

  • use vintage-style signage, black-and-white prints, aged frames, and illustrated silhouettes
  • incorporate heirloom-style items or thrifted finds (old apothecary bottles, skulls, candelabras) to lend history and narrative
  • favour muted colour schemes (cream, sepia, faded black) so the vintage elements don’t look kitschy
  • layer in flickering candles, brass touches or soft patina metals to give warmth and depth.

3. Moody glam gothic / dark elegance

Dark, dramatic and refined is very much trending. The gothic glam aesthetic blends moody colours with luxe materials and theatrical touches.

  • rich hues: deep plum, burgundy, charcoal, inky blues, dark greens, black
  • materials: velvet, satin, aged metallics, black glass, mirrored surfaces
  • details: candelabras, ornate frames, lace veils, moody florals (dark calla lilies, dried black roses)
  • use contrast — dark backgrounds with lighter accent objects (ivory pumpkins, bone-white ceramics).
  • dramatic lighting (uplights, spotlights) to cast shadows and highlight texture.

Items you will need:

  • 1 1/2 cups magnesium salt flakes
  • 1 1/2 cups of powdered milk (you can also use coconut powdered milk if you prefer)
  • 1/2 cup bi-carb soda
  • 30 drops of essential oil (we suggest lavender oil but you could use any relaxing blend)
  • 4 tablespoons of dried lavender
  • Dehydrated citrus fruits (follow our DIY here to make your own dehydrated fruits)
  • Large bowl
  • Fork
  • Airtight container to store your milk bath salts

Steps:

1. In a bowl, combine the magnesium flakes, powdered milk and bi-carb soda using a fork.

Combine magnesium flakes
Combine 1.5 cups of magnesium flakes, 1.5 cups of powdered milk and 0.5 cups of bi-carb soda

2. Add 30 drops of essential oil and stir again. We suggest adding 15 drops, stirring, and then adding another 15 to get a more even distribution. Alternatively, you could dilute the essential oil with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil.

3. Add your dried lavender and dehydrated citrus fruits and gently stir with a fork one last time. It’s easy to make your own dehydrated citrus fruits in the oven, just follow this tutorial where we show how to make dehydrated orange slices.

Want to keep your home smelling divine without constantly spraying air fresheners or burning candles? Wax block air fresheners are the perfect solution! These scented beauties release a gentle fragrance over time and can be tucked into drawers, hung in wardrobes, or displayed as decorative pieces. Plus, they’re easy to make, customisable, and free from the nasties often found in store-bought alternatives.

Here’s how to make your own DIY wax block air fresheners — and trust us, your nose will thank you!

What are wax block air fresheners?

Wax block air fresheners (also known as scented wax tablets or hanging wax fresheners) are solid wax blocks infused with fragrance oils, essential oils, or dried botanicals. Unlike candles, they don’t require a flame to release their scent. Instead, they slowly diffuse their fragrance into the surrounding air, making them ideal for wardrobes, linen closets, and small spaces.

Materials you will need
Materials you will need to make wax bar air fresheners

Materials:

  • Soy wax or beeswax (a natural, non-toxic wax base that holds scent well)
  • Fragrance oil or essential oil (choose scents like lavender, vanilla, citrus, or sandalwood)
  • Silicone moulds (any shape you like, but smaller moulds work best)
  • Dried flowers, herbs, or citrus peels (for a decorative touch and extra aroma)
  • Wick sustainers or tool like a small screwdriver (to create a hanging option)
  • Ribbons or twine (for display or hanging)
  • Double boiler, steel jug or microwave-safe jug (for melting wax)
  • Mixing spoon (to blend in fragrance oils evenly)
  • Measuring spoon (to ensure the right ratio of fragrance to wax)

Steps:

Step 1: Melt the wax

Melt your soy wax or beeswax until it reaches a smooth, liquid consistency. We used a stainless steel jug on the cooktop at a low heat. You could also use a double boiler or a microwave-safe jug in 30-second bursts. If using a thermometer, aim for around 70°C (158°F) for optimal fragrance absorption.

Melt the wax
Melt the wax on low heat

Step 2: Add fragrance

Remove the melted wax from heat and let it cool slightly to around 60°C (140°F). Add your chosen fragrance or essential oil — typically around 10% of the wax weight for a strong scent. Stir thoroughly to ensure even distribution.

Add fragrance
We prefer to use 100% essential oil but you can also use fragrance
Add fragrance once wax cools
Add fragrance once wax cools

Step 3: Place your flowers in the moulds

If you want to achieve the pressed flower looking fragrance blocks like we did, add your flowers into the moulds first and fully submerge them in wax. Alternatively, you could pour the wax first and then sprinkle decorative accents on top before the wax fully hardens. Decorative elements like dried citrus or cinnamon sticks look best on top. Press them gently into the surface so they adhere as the wax cools.

Place flowers in moulds
Place flowers in moulds

Step 4: Cover in wax

Carefully pour the scented wax over the flowers into your silicone moulds. If you want to make hanging wax fresheners, insert a wick sustainer at the top or you can use a tool like a small screwdriver to make a hole once the wax has slightly set.

Gently push flowers down to submerge them into the wax

Step 5: Set and unmould

Let the wax blocks cool and harden completely — this takes about 2–3 hours at room temperature. Once solid, gently pop them out of the moulds.

Step 6: Add finishing touches

If you made hanging air fresheners, thread a ribbon or twine through the hole. For wax blocks meant for drawers, store them in small breathable bags to protect clothing while still releasing their scent.

Where to use wax block air fresheners?

These wax blocks are incredibly versatile and can be stored just about anywhere around your home for long-lasting fragrance.

  • Wardrobes and closets: keep your clothes smelling fresh
  • Linen cupboards: infuse your towels and sheets with a subtle fragrance
  • Drawers: a lovely alternative to traditional sachets
  • Bathrooms: combat musty smells naturally
  • Near entryways: a welcoming scent for guests.

Tips for the best DIY wax air fresheners

After having made several batches of these wax block air fresheners, we’ve picked up some tricks for best results.

  • Use high-quality fragrance oils or pure essential oils: synthetic or weak scents may not last as long
  • Don’t overheat the wax: high temperatures can burn off the fragrance
  • Mix essential oils for unique blends: try lemon + rosemary for freshness, or lavender + vanilla for relaxation. We have plenty of essential oil blends in this article.
  • Experiment with decorative touches: from dyes to natural elements like dried flowers and cinnamon sticks, there are plenty of ways you can make this DIY your own!
  • Refresh the scent: if the fragrance fades, gently warm the surface with a hairdryer and add a few drops of oil.
Hang your fragrance wax bars in your wardrobe
Hang your fragrance wax bars in your wardrobe or place in a drawer

Frequently asked questions

How long do wax block air fresheners last?
They can keep their scent for 3–6 months, depending on the fragrance used and placement. You can use the trick above to easily refresh the scent or reuse them (see below).

Can I reuse them?
Yes! Melt them down and add more fragrance oil to refresh them. Simply repeat the steps in this tutorial.

Do they stain clothes?
Not if stored correctly! Keep them in a breathable pouch or wrap them in tissue paper.

21. Bauble wreath

It’s just not Christmas without a wreath. And while we have an entire article dedicated to Christmas wreaths you can DIY, we still felt the need to add this one to our list of Christmas DIY ideas.

For a non-traditional Christmas wreath, this bauble wreath is actually gorgeous! More often than not, bauble wreaths are gaudy and… well, tacky. This one made by Jaharn of Smor Home is a total Christmas vibe. Find the how to instructions here.

22. Christmas clay ornaments

Our DIY Christmas clay ornament tutorial is quick, easy and fun to make. Plus, it’s a great activity to involve the kids.

Choose whatever shape you like, using cookie cutters as your mould. From stars to gingerbread people, the world is your Christmas ornament oyster.

23. Tassel Christmas tree

We spied these yarn tassel Christmas trees while scrolling on Pintrest and thought they were the sweetest Christmas decor idea. They look simple enough to DIY yourself, however if you want to cheat, they’re also available on Etsy. It’s ok, we won’t tell if you buy instead of DIY!

24. Christmas village hoop wreath

Among all the beautiful Christmas wreaths you can DIY, we have to highlight this Christmas village hoop version by the girls at My Sister’s Suitcase. A creative twist on the classic wreath, it’s a wonderful holiday decoration that will definitely make a statement in your home!

25. Table canopy

If you can’t tell by now, we absolutely love Collective Gen’s Christmas DIYs. The same can absolutely be said about this easy Christmas table canopy DIY, which uses only four materials! So pretty and easy to dress up with some greenery, it really sets the mood at this Christmas table.

26. Minimalist wooden Christmas trees

If tinsel and tacky Christmas gives you the ick, these minimalist wooden Christmas tree decorations might be more your vibe.

Elegant and pared back, they’re a super sweet DIY you can whip up following the how to instructions from Homey Oh My.

27. Flat pack Christmas tree

If you only have space for a table-top Christmas tree, and something that’s easy to store, this little flat pack Christmas tree might be just the ticket.

The DIY is in Norwegian, but it looks simple enough! Cut out 2 Christmas trees from MDF or balsa wood, add a slit into one piece and then slot together.

28. DIY Christmas stockings

Decorating your fireplace, or even fake fireplace, is a fun and unique part of Christmas styling. There is such a variety of Christmas stockings available on the market, but this DIY pom pom Christmas stocking by A Beautiful Mess is truly something different. You only need five materials to make this colourful keepsake!

29. Dried orange slices

With so many different ways to use dried orange slices, it’s no wonder our dried orange slice DIY tutorial is trending again! You can make your own slices to use in whatever way you want, whether a garland or ornament. The opportunities are endless.

For example, we love how The Merry Thought have styled theirs across a floating shelf. They also show how to style a dried orange garland down a staircase, and even into a wreath!

30. DIY scrap wood Christmas trees

For a sustainable Christmas DIY, Zoe from pine + poplar created a whole forest of these DIY Christmas trees using scrap wood and it looks so good! Definitely a great rustic decor piece you can add to your home.

31. Painted ornaments

If you’re tired of your old Christmas ornaments and want to change up your Christmas tree this year, take a cue from Brittni from Paper & Stitch and simply paint them! She added pops of on-trend colours in gorgeous earthy tones to these timber ornaments.

But you can also paint over any type of bauble or ornament you have. We’ve seen some clever DIYers use the baking powder paint trick to give old ornaments a colourful raw clay effect.

Pro tip: Grab some ornaments in the post-Christmas sales. They’re usually dirt cheap, and it doesn’t matter what they look like, cause they’ll look fab once you paint them!

32. Dowel Christmas tree and eucalyptus garland

For a bit more of a pared back Aussie style tree, we love the idea of this dowel Christmas tree with eucalyptus garland from North South Home Collective. Another alternative Christmas tree idea that’s a winner in our books.

33. Festive candle holder

This next one on our Christmas DIY ideas list couldn’t be more simple. Some pine (fake it if you can’t get the real deal), a glass bottle, water, a candle, done. And yet… it looks absolutely gorgeous, don’t you think?!

34. Rosemary napkin rings

This Christmas DIY is simple, easy (our favourite kind!) and is guaranteed to make your Christmas table smell divine!

Using sprigs of rosemary and some ribbon to suit your tablescape, you can find the video on how to create them on Jacqueline’s Christmas DIY Instagram highlights.

35. Kmart bamboo caddy candle holder

Ah, good old Kmart never lets us down, even when it comes to Christmas DIY ideas! Using the Kmart bamboo storage box, Emily added some foraged foliage and candles to create a gorgeous Christmas table centrepiece.

Maybe just don’t light the candles if you do this one!

She even shares how to make some of the wreaths pictured below in her Instagram Christmas highlights.

37. Lush mantle garland

This asymmetrical garland looks so beautiful and makes us want a fireplace so bad! Erin shares how she made it on her blog, if you’re keen to give it a go. It would look just as beautiful up a staircase, or a slightly pared back version as a table centrepiece.

38. Twine wrapped trees

Using twine and bits of scrap wood, Regina shows how she made these cute twine trees. We love the idea of using scrap pieces and offcuts to create something so gorgeous. Find the DIY how to here.

Christmas is right around the corner and with the festivities comes a mad dash for gifts, food and Christmas decorations. Although Christmas is our favourite time of the year, the total cost of Christmas can really weigh down your wallet.

Today we’re sharing this super cheap and easy DIY paper bag snowflake hack to help you add a big dose of festive styling to your home without breaking the budget.

Items you’ll need:

  • 8 paper bags
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • String

Steps:

1. Glue eight paper bags together along the base and spine. Essentially, you are writing an upside down T on each bag with glue to stick a stack of bags together.

Make sure the glue is dry before continuing.

2. Cut your preferred shape with scissors. We went with a simple petal shape by using a curved line but you can use a diagonal line for a more pointed star.

3. Add decorative elements such as small diamond cutouts and circles with your hole punch. Don’t be afraid to experiment! If you have a craft punch or stamps you want to use, go for it!

4. Glue the two ends together by repeating the upside down T technique from Step 1.

5. Punch a hole through one tip of the star, place some string through it and hang up your creation!

With this hack, more is more! So we suggest creating a cluster of 5 or more stars that you can hang along a wall or suspend from the ceiling. Experiment with different shapes and styles for added interest. Plus, you can use a mix of different paper bags, such as white, or different shades of brown.

Given you can buy a bag of 100 paper bags for just $1, this has got to be one of the most affordable Christmas decorating tricks out there. And because this is such a simple yet high impact DIY, we’re sure you’ll have fun making it too!

What do you think of this DIY paper bag snowflake? Will you try it out this Christmas? Have you made your own version? We’d love to know! Leave us a comment in the comment section below!

It’s hard to ignore the current Christmas trend that is dried oranges — or dried orange slices to be exact! I first stumbled upon this idea for gift wrapping and have since seen it used to make dried orange garlands (to decorate a mantel or Christmas tree), DIY Christmas ornaments (looks especially fab when combined with timber beads) and as you guys told me — to garnish cocktails!

I shared a reel on my Instagram account showing how easy it is to make your own and it’s had tens of thousands of views. Loads of you have also tagged me in your dried orange making pics (which I LOVE) so I decided to share the tutorial on the blog as well.

How to make dried orange slices
Start by cutting an orange into thin slices
Finished dried orange slices

Items you will need to make dried orange slices:

  • Oranges (blood oranges look amazing if you can get your hands on any or other citrus fruits, like lemons, also work well)
  • Baking tray and baking paper
  • Sugar (you can use any kind, I used raw sugar which gave a crystallised effect)
  • Spices (I used cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg but ginger is also great)

Steps for how to make dried orange slices:

1. Cut an orange into the thinnest slices possible.

2. Place onto a baking tray lined with baking paper.

3. Sprinkle with sugar and spices (the combination of cinnamon and a dash of nutmeg was delish!).

4. Bake in the oven for 3 hours at 95 degrees.

Tip: If you’ve tried making orange slices and they come out burnt, adjust your oven to a lower heat. It’s better to bake them for longer and at a lower temperature to get the best dehydration effect.

5. Once cool, use as to decorate or eat as you like!

How to use dried orange or citrus slices

There are so many ways you can use dehydrated citrus slices — especially at Christmas time — so many in fact the we wrote a whole article about festive ways to use dried orange slices!

Some of my favourite ways to use dried orange slices:

  • Use it in your gift wrapping: place a dried orange slice into a pocket of your gift wrapping or thread a piece through ribbon or twine.
  • Turn it into a Christmas ornament: just add some sweet ribbon, perhaps a cinnamon stick or some timber beads and you’ve got yourself a stylish, sustainable and scented Christmas ornament!
  • Garnish a cocktail: I love that when I first shared this tutorial, most of you immediately thought to use these for cocktails. If you’re looking for a new cocktail to try, this citrus trio recipe sounds amazing!
  • Make a garland: if you’ve got the patience to make a lot of dried orange slices, they look incredible as a garland or attached to a traditional pine garland. Drape it over your fireplace mantel or down your stair balustrade.
  • Add it to a simmer kit: simmer kits are a fabulous way to make your home smell amazing and make for a beautiful home made Christmas gift idea.
  • Eat it: yep, they make a delicious snack on their own or dip them in chocolate to elevate them!

Have you been inspired to try this dried orange slice tutorial? If you do, I’d love you to tag me in your pics (find me at @stylecuratorau on all social platforms) or to email them through to hello@stylecurator.com.au!
