Our motto is to create a stylish home you love but it shouldn’t cost the earth — figuratively or literally! We’ve always been keen thrift shoppers and upcyclers, and love how this movement is gaining popularity. Blame years of fast-furniture and fast-homewares or simply the ever rising cost of living but there’s been a noticeable shift recently towards more sustainable home decorating ideas.

People seem more open than ever to upcycle furniture, reuse old items in new ways, and shop more consciously to be kinder to the environment and their wallet. And we’re here for it! To inspire you to join this movement, we’ve gathered our favourite eco-friendly home styling ideas.

1. Give old furniture a refresh with paint

Possibly one of the most popular ways to upcycle an old piece of furniture is with paint. But what many people don’t know is just how easy it is to do this! From chalk paint that doesn’t need primer to spray cans that cut the time down to minutes, this quick upcycle hack will have you looking at old furniture with new eyes.

Over the years, Gina has painted plenty of furniture including a thrift store dresser and old timber coffee table in a tile-effect.

Tip: You can be so creative with paint. Consider using two colours to do a stripe or checkered pattern. Or channel your inner artist and try a floral or other pattern. Did you know it’s not just timber and metal that can be painted but upholstery too?!

2. Reimagine dated photo frames

We love how photo frames can personalise your home by displaying your favourite memories but they’re typically pretty boring! This clever thrifter picked up a range of old photo frames and gave them a cohesive glow-up using paint, timber beads and stain. Not only are the results fab but this video is too cute not to watch!

3. Old towel becomes cement vase

Some people are just so creative! Before you throw away your old towels, consider making your own concrete fluted vase like Shannen of @ourperthreno did! Essentially she dipped an old towel in cement and allowed it to dry over a PVC pipe to create this luxe-looking fluted vase.

Find all our favourite concrete DIYs here.

4. Turn old bedsheets into wall art

There are sooo many ideas out there on how you can turn old bedsheets into wall art. Many of them are questionable, haha.

This understated one we found on TikTok was one of the best, achieving a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Whether you have old frames you don’t like any more or bedsheets that have seen better days — or both! — you can use this DIY tutorial to repurpose those materials. Consider putting your own spin on this art, perhaps incorporating colours you like or playing with different forms.

5. Left over pavers becomes side table

If you’ve got left over pavers, why not turn them into a stylish side table? Gina used left over terrazzo tiles to make this curved side table. But if you can’t cut the pavers down to size, you can simply place 3 pavers in the same T design to achieve a similar design. Follow our DIY tutorial to make your own side table.

6. Dated vases get a clay makeover

It was hard to miss the ‘Trash to terracotta’ trend a few years ago! While the ultra-organic aesthetic has tempered down, there’s no denying this is still a fabulous way to give old objects a completely new look and feel.

To create the clay-effect paint, all you need to do is add a teaspoon or two of baking powder to regular paint. Whether you have an old vase or perhaps a table lamp with an unsightly base, this painting trick will have it looking like a contemporary, clay piece in no time.

7. Turn a plastic bottle into a pendant light

Want to add ambience to your home with softer lighting? This DIY pendant light using an old plastic bottle looks fab, especially when several are clustered together.

8. Reuse old jars as pantry storage

You don’t have to spend hundreds on beautifully matching plastic or glass canisters for your pantry when you can reuse jars and tins. We love this mix of jars below and the use of a white chalk pen to give them that whole foods aesthetic.

9. Make a coffee table out of cardboard and paper

Won’t lie, we were super sceptical about how this would turn out but shut our mouths when we saw the final result. Seriously!!!

No one would know this organic looking table is made from cardboard and paper mache!

10. Drawers become a hanging planter

There are so many ways you can repurpose timber drawers around your home. Just google ‘drawer upcycle’ and you’ll find ideas ranging from magazine storage boxes to hanging planters! It’s a clever idea to salvage what you can from an old piece of furniture that can’t be restored.

11. Turn a plastic cleaning bottle into a vase

If you’re in need of a vase, this inexpensive hack is sustainable and stylish! We’d probably leave the jute twine and consider using a coloured paint or the clay-effect paint trick we mentioned earlier. How would you put your own spin on it?

12. Plastic bottles become floor lamp

Talk about looking at rubbish in a whole new way! Gen took a bunch of old plastic bottles and turned them into this contemporary floor lamp! Find out how on her blog.

13. Keep pretty tins and turn them into a lamp

Turns out almost anything can become a lamp — including cute food tins! Loads of people commented on this video saying how much they loved all the creative ideas, and that the most creative thing they’ve done with old tins is use it as storage for their coffee pods. Hey, that’s still repurposing and reusing!

14. Turn your old tyre into an ottoman

If you’ve got any old tyres around the place, why not put them to good use and turn them into an ottoman or side table? Simply wrap them in rope and you’ve got a durable, weather resistant piece of furniture — perfect for your outdoor area.

15. Make an unusual floor lamp with paper mache

Never have we seen this — not made from new materials or recycled ones! Innovative and unusual, this lamp inspires many creative ideas… What would you make out of paper mache?

16. Tile an old table

If your outdoor table is looking worse for wear (or perhaps just a bit dated!), why not give it a stylish makeover with tiles?! Tiles can add pattern and colour, are highly durable and will transform any table into a long-lasting furniture piece.

What is sustainable home decor?

Sustainable home decor is all about creating beautiful spaces while keeping our environmental footprint as light as possible. Instead of chasing fast trends that lead to more waste, it’s about choosing mindful ways to decorate by reimagining old items, repurposing everyday objects or extending the life of what we already have. For example, we can give old objects and furniture a makeover by going thrifting, salvaging and using one of the upcycle techniques in this article to give them new life. Alternatively, repurposing everyday items like cardboard and plastic bottles and turning them into creative home accents leans into the trash to treasure movement.

Equally important is caring for the things we already own. Repairing instead of replacing, maintaining quality pieces, and appreciating their longevity are some of the most sustainable design choices we can make. By embracing these practices, sustainable home decor not only reduces waste but also adds character and uniqueness to our homes.

Want to keep your home smelling divine without constantly spraying air fresheners or burning candles? Wax block air fresheners are the perfect solution! These scented beauties release a gentle fragrance over time and can be tucked into drawers, hung in wardrobes, or displayed as decorative pieces. Plus, they’re easy to make, customisable, and free from the nasties often found in store-bought alternatives.

Here’s how to make your own DIY wax block air fresheners — and trust us, your nose will thank you!

What are wax block air fresheners?

Wax block air fresheners (also known as scented wax tablets or hanging wax fresheners) are solid wax blocks infused with fragrance oils, essential oils, or dried botanicals. Unlike candles, they don’t require a flame to release their scent. Instead, they slowly diffuse their fragrance into the surrounding air, making them ideal for wardrobes, linen closets, and small spaces.

Materials you will need
Materials you will need to make wax bar air fresheners

Materials:

  • Soy wax or beeswax (a natural, non-toxic wax base that holds scent well)
  • Fragrance oil or essential oil (choose scents like lavender, vanilla, citrus, or sandalwood)
  • Silicone moulds (any shape you like, but smaller moulds work best)
  • Dried flowers, herbs, or citrus peels (for a decorative touch and extra aroma)
  • Wick sustainers or tool like a small screwdriver (to create a hanging option)
  • Ribbons or twine (for display or hanging)
  • Double boiler, steel jug or microwave-safe jug (for melting wax)
  • Mixing spoon (to blend in fragrance oils evenly)
  • Measuring spoon (to ensure the right ratio of fragrance to wax)

Steps:

Step 1: Melt the wax

Melt your soy wax or beeswax until it reaches a smooth, liquid consistency. We used a stainless steel jug on the cooktop at a low heat. You could also use a double boiler or a microwave-safe jug in 30-second bursts. If using a thermometer, aim for around 70°C (158°F) for optimal fragrance absorption.

Melt the wax
Melt the wax on low heat

Step 2: Add fragrance

Remove the melted wax from heat and let it cool slightly to around 60°C (140°F). Add your chosen fragrance or essential oil — typically around 10% of the wax weight for a strong scent. Stir thoroughly to ensure even distribution.

Add fragrance
We prefer to use 100% essential oil but you can also use fragrance
Add fragrance once wax cools
Add fragrance once wax cools

Step 3: Place your flowers in the moulds

If you want to achieve the pressed flower looking fragrance blocks like we did, add your flowers into the moulds first and fully submerge them in wax. Alternatively, you could pour the wax first and then sprinkle decorative accents on top before the wax fully hardens. Decorative elements like dried citrus or cinnamon sticks look best on top. Press them gently into the surface so they adhere as the wax cools.

Place flowers in moulds

Step 4: Cover in wax

Carefully pour the scented wax over the flowers into your silicone moulds. If you want to make hanging wax fresheners, insert a wick sustainer at the top or you can use a tool like a small screwdriver to make a hole once the wax has slightly set.

Gently push flowers down to submerge them into the wax

Step 5: Set and unmould

Let the wax blocks cool and harden completely — this takes about 2–3 hours at room temperature. Once solid, gently pop them out of the moulds.

Step 6: Add finishing touches

If you made hanging air fresheners, thread a ribbon or twine through the hole. For wax blocks meant for drawers, store them in small breathable bags to protect clothing while still releasing their scent.

Where to use wax block air fresheners?

These wax blocks are incredibly versatile and can be stored just about anywhere around your home for long-lasting fragrance.

  • Wardrobes and closets: keep your clothes smelling fresh
  • Linen cupboards: infuse your towels and sheets with a subtle fragrance
  • Drawers: a lovely alternative to traditional sachets
  • Bathrooms: combat musty smells naturally
  • Near entryways: a welcoming scent for guests.

Tips for the best DIY wax air fresheners

After having made several batches of these wax block air fresheners, we’ve picked up some tricks for best results.

  • Use high-quality fragrance oils or pure essential oils: synthetic or weak scents may not last as long
  • Don’t overheat the wax: high temperatures can burn off the fragrance
  • Mix essential oils for unique blends: try lemon + rosemary for freshness, or lavender + vanilla for relaxation. We have plenty of essential oil blends in this article.
  • Experiment with decorative touches: from dyes to natural elements like dried flowers and cinnamon sticks, there are plenty of ways you can make this DIY your own!
  • Refresh the scent: if the fragrance fades, gently warm the surface with a hairdryer and add a few drops of oil.
Hang your fragrance wax bars in your wardrobe
Hang your fragrance wax bars in your wardrobe or place in a drawer

Frequently asked questions

How long do wax block air fresheners last?
They can keep their scent for 3–6 months, depending on the fragrance used and placement. You can use the trick above to easily refresh the scent or reuse them (see below).

Can I reuse them?
Yes! Melt them down and add more fragrance oil to refresh them. Simply repeat the steps in this tutorial.

Do they stain clothes?
Not if stored correctly! Keep them in a breathable pouch or wrap them in tissue paper.

Or consider building out the half height wall to create a ledge. Gina recently did this in her master bedroom makeover using that gorgeous new Convex wall panel material and added terrazzo tile on top to finish the look.

Before you think ‘too hard’, she made this on her own (with the occasional help of her mini apprentice) and despite having no idea what she was doing, pulled it off. She shares all the steps here.

14. Introduce a pop of colour

Different colours can have various effects, so do a little reading on colour psychology to make an informed decision on what colour to bring into your space. You don’t even have to be bold. There’s nothing wrong with introducing a muted blush or even beige.

A lazy susan is super useful in the kitchen. We love using them to store condiments, or in pantries to utilise those awkward corner spots. Kim has taken it to the next level by attaching a timber tray to the top of the clear lazy susan. Stylish and useful!

Caddy hack

There’s more than meets the eye with this clever Kmart hack that Alanna made. She says it was an easy weekend job that required no power tools as she used the existing screws and holes.

“I wanted the caddy the same height as the bath so moved the tiers up and cut the legs to height. Then used the original top tier as a lid and now have somewhere to store my lady things,” she explains.

Bamboo drawer as floating shelf

Whether you’ve got a young child who loves reaching for cords or simply want a discreet way to display smaller electronics, such as your home phone, Megan has found the solution! She turned a bamboo drawer upside down and mounted it to the wall to create a wall shelf with an underside that is large enough to keep cables out of sight.

Water bottle storage

Look… this one isn’t revolutionary, but it is handy so we thought we’d still include it in our clever Kmart hacks. These stackable wine bottle holders are a great solution for storing water bottles. They work great in the pantry or, as Style Curator writer Dan has done, put them in your fridge to have plenty of cold water on hand.

Create your own removable storage shelves

If you have high shelves in your home, it can be tricky to fully utilise the space, especially if you’re renting and can’t make any permanent changes. Another clever Kmart hacker came up with this handy solution. Simply secure two Kmart mesh shelves together with cable ties, trim and that’s it!

Shower caddy becomes hair accessories storage

Kids have a lot of stuff. Like… a lot of stuff! And one thing that can be tricky to store, is kid’s hair accessories. Headbands, hairbrushes, bows, clips, hair ties… how do you keep it neat and tidy?

Lauren took the Kmart over the door shower caddy into her daughter’s bedroom and created a smart and organised hair accessories storage solution.

With flu season just around the corner, I’ve come up with a stylish and inexpensive DIY grid tile tissue box project! In case you missed my first tissue box cover DIY, check out how I used paper and Mod Podge to create a simple and stylish tissue box in minutes. This DIY is a little more advanced as it involves cutting tiles. But with the right tools and materials, it’s still an easy DIY project. Minimalist and modern, I’m so happy with how this grid tile tissue box cover turned out.

Keep scrolling to find out how you can make your own grid tile tissue box cover too!

Items you will need:

  • Craft tissue box (I bought this tissue box from Bunnings)
  • 2 x sheets of white square mosaic tiles (also from Bunnings)
  • Tile cutter
  • T-Rex glue
  • White grout (and a bucket and wooden spoon to mix)
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Grout float
  • Sponge
  • Ruler
  • Sharpie
Items you will need to make tile tissue box
Items you will need to make your own grid tile tissue box cover

Steps:

1. Cut one section of tile mosaic that is 5 tiles wide x 3 tiles long. Because you’ll need an opening for the tissues, remove the centre tile. Then glue these tiles onto the top of the craft tissue box using a generous amount of T-Rex glue. You’ll notice the tiles overhang slightly along the edges.

2. For this reason, I cut 2 pieces of cardboard that are the same size as the two long sides of the tissue box to pad these out. Glue one piece of cardboard on each long edge. This will avoid the need to cut down the tiles on the top for the cleanest finish.

Add extra cardboard
I padded out the sides of the tissue box to avoid having to cut the top tiles

3. Then place a section of tile mosaic that is 3 tiles wide x 5 tiles long onto the long side of the tissue box. Using your sharpie, mark where the tile meets the base of the tissue box. So you can get the cleanest cut, draw a straight guide line across.

4. Then cut the tiles along this line using your tile cutter.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other long side of your tissue box.

6. Then glue the cut down mosaic tiles onto the long sides of the tissue box.

7. Following this, it’s time to measure and cut the tiles for the two smaller sides of the tissue box. You’ll need 2 sections of tile that are 3 tiles wide x 3 tiles long. Place these onto the face of the tissue box and again use your sharpie to measure how much tile needs to be cut.

8. Next, it’s time to cut the tiles down to size. It helps to draw straight guide lines with your ruler and pencil so you can line it up perfectly with the blade of the tile cutter.

9. Then glue them in place with T-Rex glue and allow to dry for 24 hours.

10. Once the glue has dried, it’s time to grout the tissue box. At first I was thinking of using a coloured grout for added interest. But my tile cuts weren’t the cleanest so I decided to use white grout. Mix up a batch of grout and use your tile float to press it into all of the joints.

Grouting can get a little messy!

Use a tile float to press grout into all the joints

11. Then while the grout is still wet, use a damp sponge to gently wipe away the excess grout.

Wipe clean with a damp (not wet) sponge

12. Finally, once the grout has dried use a sander to gently sand down any coarse edges that may need smoothing.

And you’re done! Although this DIY was a little more involved, I’m so pleased with it! Because the tiles protect the tissue box, this is a great one to include in wet areas of the home. For example, use it in your bathroom, laundry or kitchen.

Reducing the number of chemicals you use around your home can only be a good thing — for our families and the environment. Today we’re sharing a comprehensive list of natural and low-tox cleaning recipes for every zone of the home that you can make yourself. Using the best essential oils for cleaning, get ready to make some simple swaps that will help save on your hip pocket, create a healthier home and reduce our impact on the environment.

We’ve also developed a stack of helpful graphics with these recipes so you can save them to your Pinterest account or print them off at home.

Why essential oils?

Essential oils can be used for effective, non-toxic cleaning thanks to their antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral properties. All our tips and cleaning hacks are simple, cost-effective and better for the environment.

We recently shared an article about our top 10 essential oils and as promised, all our recipes and hacks in this posts will feature oils from this list.

Our favourite oils for cleaning: Citrus oils (lemon, orange, lemongrass), eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender and clove

Use these oils alongside castile soap, cheap and cheerful bicarbonate soda (aka bicarb soda aka baking soda but NOT to be confused with baking powder!) and white vinegar.

Important: As with any new cleaning product, we recommend doing a test patch first with any of these recipes — JUST in case!

ECO essential oils for a non-toxic home

Kitchen cleaning hacks

Dishwasher cleaner

Show your dishwasher a bit of love by giving it a good clean, minus the chemicals.

Simply sprinkle 1 tbsp of bicarb soda in the bottom of your dishwasher, fill the tablet container with white vinegar along with 5 drops of lemon essential oil and run on the hot cycle.

Simple, effective, natural.

Sink cleaner

Use orange oil to polish up the kitchen sink by mixing a few drops with bicarb soda and scrubbing well with a sponge. Then step back and check out that shine!

Or to remove water marks from a stainless steel sink, dip half a lemon in salt and use it to gently scrub your sink.

Use essential oils to clean your sink

Kitchen wipes

Use a combination of eucalyptus and citrus oils (we love lemon) to make your own kitchen wipes. Super easy and they smell wonderful!

Here’s how to make your own kitchen wet wipes:

  1. Grab a roll of paper towel (we find Viva works best) and this 2L Kmart storage container.
  2. In a measuring jug, add 1.5 cups of distilled water (or simply use cooled, boiled water), 2 tbsp castile soap and 20 drops of essential oil (eucalyptus and lemon are our top picks).
  3. Stir together then pour half the mixture into the container. Push in your paper towel and carefully pour the rest of the mixture evenly over the top of the paper towel.
  4. Carefully wriggle out the cardboard core and gently pull the middle piece of towel up so it’s ready to go. Allow the liquid to soak in before you start using them.

There you have it, DIY kitchen wipes!

Fridge refresher

Fridge not smelling too crash hot? Ditch toxic chemicals that can linger and create toxic odours, and try our natural fridge cleaner spray instead.

To make a natural fridge cleaner, simply combine:

  • 1 cup of salt
  • 5 drops of lemon oil (or any of the citrus oils)
  • half a litre of hot water

Stir until the salt is dissolved and use it to wipe down the inside of your fridge.

To keep it smelling nice, pop a few drops of lemon (or your preferred citrus oil) onto a cotton ball and place into the fridge.

3 kitchen sprays

Add lemon oil to your DIY all-purpose cleaner (unless you have natural marble countertops or splashback where citrus oils should be avoided).

You can check out our 3 natural cleaner spray recipes here.

Natural cleaning paste

Get those pots and pans sparkling with an all natural cleaning paste.

Mix 1 cup baking soda, 2 tbsp castile soap, 15 drops of orange essential oil and 1/8 cup water.

Store in a glass jar and grab it out any time your saucepans need a good clean.

Cut through grease and grime

Use your favourite citrus oil to directly cut through grease spills and messes. A few drops onto the surface and a microfiber cloth will eliminate oil residue.

Floor cleaner

For tiled areas, try mixing white vinegar with hot water and lemongrass essential oil to cut through dirt and grime.

Natural bathroom cleaning recipes

Soft scrub

A soft scrub has so many uses in the bathroom — use it to get your shower screen sparkling clean, remove grime from your vanity and basin, in and around your bath, and even your toilet, too!

Watch the video below to see how easy it is to make our favourite soft scrub cleaner and find more detailed steps here.

And here’s another soft scrub cleaning recipe to try using clove oil.

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup castile soap
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 5 drops clove (for fighting mould) OR 5 drops each of lemon and tea tree oil

Just mix all ingredients together to form a paste and store in a glass jar. To use, spread over the area you want to clean using a cleaning cloth, leave for 5 minutes then wash off.

Toilet spray

Ditch the fake fragrance-filled toilet sprays for our make it yourself recipe here.

Bathroom styling feature image

Toilet fizzies

Make an all natural toilet cleaner by using our DIY bath fizzies recipe. Just swap out the oils for eucalyptus and tea tree. Then, simply drop one into the toilet watch it fizz up (it’s like a bath bomb for your toilet!) and scrub away. These are great at disinfecting and deodorising your toilet (and they’re kinda fun too!)

Foaming handwash

Make your own foaming hand wash with just three ingredients! Start with a foaming bottle — you can find these online OR reuse one from a store-bought foaming soap.

Add 1 tbsp of castile soap, 20 drops of your favourite essential oil then top up the bottle with distilled water (or just use cooled, boiled water).

We love orange and peppermint for the bathroom, or tea tree, lemon and eucalyptus for the kitchen.

DIY bathroom cleaning products

Easy laundry cleaning recipes

Stain treatment

To treat oil-based stains, apply eucalyptus oil directly to the stain and allow to evaporate before washing as normal.

Washing booster

Add some drops of eucalyptus to the washing machine before starting your cycle for that added boost to your washing.

Laundry washing machine Betta

DIY washing powder

Want to make your own washing powder? Here’s how!

  • 500g sunlight soap (available in the laundry aisle)
  • 200g epsom salts
  • 500g washing soda (available in the laundry aisle)
  • 500g bicarb soda
  • 40 drops essential oils — we love using lavender, lemon, tea tree or eucalyptus but you can simply choose your favourite scents

Chop the soap into pieces and blitz in a high-speed blender until it becomes a fine powder. It needs to be super fine so it will break down in cold water.

Add the epsom salts, washing soda and bicarb and blitz again for 30 seconds at medium speed.

Carefully add your essential oils then mix again for 20 seconds at high speed.

Store in an airtight container — done!

Sleepy sheets

When washing your linen, add a few drops of lavender into the detergent dispenser for fresh, beautiful and sleepy-smelling sheets.

DIY laundry cleaning products(

Other natural cleaning swaps for around the home

Simple phone cleaner

Just a couple of drops of lemon oil onto your cleaning cloth gets your phone sparkling (and removes all those hidden germs that lurk on the surface!).

Carpet / sofa / mattress cleaner

Sprinkle 1 cup of bicarb soda and some essential oils to clean a whole raft of things around the home. Like fabric sofas, carpets or your mattresses. We love lavender for the bedroom, tea tree for the couches and a zesty citrus mix for the carpets.

Sticky labels be gone

Get rid of sticky label residue with just a few drops of lemon oil and a bit of elbow grease, straight onto the spot.

Our DIY cleaning recipes are safe to use around children as there’s no sign of any nasty, harmful chemicals.
